Sorry for the bother. Thanks.
Hi Lucy,
THere are two NEW Medieval cross stitch books now available.
One is called Medieval Cross Stitch Samplers (which is the one
people are talking about), the other is Medieval Cross Stitch
Designs.

I didn't post the original message, but I have in front of
me a book of medieval needlepoint that I bought at B&N a few weeks
ago. The info is:
Flowers, Birds, and Unicorns: Medieval Needlepoint
by Candace Bahouth
ISBN 0-8109-3316-0
published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. (1993)
US$29.95
Has anyone converted any of the charts to cross stitch? It probably
wouldn't be difficult, but all the colours are in wool, not floss.
And, there ar ephotos of several animal cusions, but only a chart
of the monkey. Does anyone know where to get the cahrts for the
others?

_Birds and Beasts in Needlepoint_ contains the charts for Candace
Bahouth's rabbit, lurcher, and squirrel. It has 26 charts in all, including
Kaffe Fasset's Victorian Cats and Sarah Windrum's Sheep at Cwmcarvan.
Publication information:
_Birds and Beasts in Needlepoint_
by Hugh Ehrman and Elizabeth Benn
Clarkson N. Potter, Inc. 1989
ISBN: 0-517-57471-3
I don't know how much it cost because it was a present and the price was
tidily snipped off the corner of the dust jacket.

I've done the opposite -- converted Elizabeth Bradley patterns from
cross stitch to tent (continental) stitch. Her kits use wool for cross
stitch, just like some of the original Victorian patterns. There is
a slight difference in the look. In tent stitch diagonal lines from
top left to bottom right are jagged. Those from top right to bottom
left are joined. For large banks of color this makes no difference,
only for small lines or angled lines.

The Candace Behouth book (Flowers etc.) contains the monkey
inspired by the Lady and Unicorn mille-fleurs tapestry in the
Cluny museum. The following book contains the rabbit, the lurcher,
and the squirrel. The cover contains a photo of a pheasant that
I have started. You can use a color photocopier to enlarge it. The
cover also contains part of the elaborate (primitive) border. I'm
using it to make a border for the pheasant in 10 mesh (rather than 7).
The back cover contains the lurcher (greyhound) and it's border.

ISBN 0-671-74987-0
Simon and Schuster, UK -- approx. $35.00 CDN
To quote from the Ehrman catalog:
Candace Behouth: "Her next book comes out in the autumn bulging
with new material. All of this will be in next year's catalogue and
it looks like being a tremendous body of work. It is frustrating
not to have any of it here but it is something to look forward to.
As compensation we have her flags and excellant compensation they make
too. They are both small and based on flags found in old prints.
They have a great sense of movement and bags of style" (The flags
are of the UK and USA).

I doubt whether it's still in print because it was published in 1989.
However, the US price then was $24.95. For some reason mine is the
American edition. I usually buy these things in bookshops selling
publishers' remainders!
Robert Tusler, Surrey, England
The UK price was 15.95 Pounds.
