Reading some recent posts here regarding Herrschners got me wondering why I
had not yet received a catalog for 1999. Off I went to their web site to
order one. On their site was notice that there is now a $3.00 charge for
sending a catalog outside the United States. In the past I have
encountered companies who have forgotten that Canada is not part of the US
so I sent them an email asking if this included catalogs to Canada
(especially considering that they have (or had) an office in Scarborough).
Not only do they now charge for the catalog but there is also a $50.00 (US)
minimum order & a $3.00 'processing fee' over and above the shipping
charges. Also, the customer is responsible for paying all duties and
tariffs which they paid in the past. They will allow Canadians to pay by
cheque (in US funds) (even if they did spell it check 8) ).
I don't really have a problem with the charge for the catalog although
$3.00 is a little steep for the size of the catalog. I don't like but
can't really object to them no longer paying the import duty. I do object
to the size of the minimum order and the additional processing fee.
Any comments from any other Canadians? Does anyone know if they have
closed their office in Scarborough, Ontario?

I agree with you as I have come up against this time and time again.
It's almost impossible to order from the US anymore, what with the
unreal postage they charge, and of course the exchange rate being what
it is right now. I never bother with US catalogues anymore..I stick with
Canadian companies if I can find them (but, gosh it's darn expensive to
have a hobby in this country don't ya find, eh?) and basically do all my
shopping local. When the exchange rate was to our benefit a few years
ago, I had a wonderful time driving through the US shopping...what a
price difference! Oh, and yes...I would pay by 'cheque'...;-)
Happy Shopping!

I'm so bitter about this! I cannot believe the outrageous minimum order
amount!! They were one of my favourite mail order outlets. No longer. I
can live with the exchange rate, as high as it is. But my orders are
usually only in the $20-30 range so I'm not about to pad them out to $50.
I will mention though that I recently ordered from 123stitch.com and the
service was so fast! Shipping to Canada was the cheapest I've seen
anywhere! Sure there's no nice shiney catalogue to thumb through, but if
you have specifics you need I highly recommend them.
I'll assume this means they've closed their Scarborough office.

When I was a kid and we lived north of Detroit, we went up to Port Huron many
times and always stoppd at Mary Maxim. Loved that store! I haven't been there
in years but I think I might have to take my husband up there when we're in
Michigan this summer. I haven't seen a catalogue from them in a long time. Do
they have a web site?
