FOR WHAT CAN I SUBSTITUTE 284Z?

I read in the home page of MLI that 284z tarnishes with time. I am about
to start Celtic Christmas, which one will be the best substitute for it?
I think the DMC new metallic thread 5282 o 5283 is lighter in color that
284z and it is thinner. Somebody say something like I should use Kreinik
braid #4, is that the best substitute?

Thanks for your input

Hi Aura,

At MLI's website www.tiag.com, she says to use one strand of DMC 5282 and
one strand of Kreinik 002HL blending filament. I have done so and it looks
quite good.
One tip with this method. When you use the blending filament, separate it
from the nylon thread first. When you stitch with it, it will twist and
sometimes the nylon thread covers the metallic and makes it appear duller.
I find it gives excellent results to remove this first, and with the
strength of the 5282, you won't find it's too fragile to work with. Also,
work with fairly short threads, as they can knot a little.

Hope this has helped,

I am working on Celtic Christmas and am using Kreinik
Metallics Very Fine #4 Braid, 202HL and it looks just fine
to me. I am loving this project, it is going very quickly!
Enjoy!!

How much time before this tarnishes? I completed Celtic Christmas
earlier this year using 284Z and would hate to think that it is going to
tarnish

thanks

I do not know exactly, but some people say that they have pieces that are 10
years old and they can begin to see the effect.

If you are doing an MLI project, SHE says to use the gold floss, adding
002HL Blending Filament. You can check this statement for veracity by
going to http://www.tiag.com and clicking on Marilyn Says. Me -- I just
use the gold floss.

Hi:

Check out MLI's web page (http://www.tiag.com) under the heading
Marilyn's Notes. She gives a recommended substitution. If you have
trouble accessing it, just e-mail me and I will e-mail you the info.

Note to be picky -- but it's under "Marilyn says", not Marilyn's Notes, if
you're having trouble finding it.... sorry....

I was at my local needlework shop looking specifically for a substitute
for dmc 284Z and found that kreinik 002J #4 braid (japan cord) is almost
the exact color and thickness as the dmc but the kreinik spools are only 11
yds and dmc spools are approximately 44 yds.......cost is $2.50/spool

Did we ever establish exactly how likely it is that 284Z will tarnish? I
heard that it degrades if you wash it in detergents containing lemon,
but in the absence of that, how 'dangerous' is it? I really like the
look of it and hoped to use it in CC. Anyone?

I think the consensus was that it tarnishes only when the piece is washed
in a detergent containing lemon.......I prefer the shine of dmc myself but
as far as I'm concerned.......why take a chance?

I'd use DMC's metallic floss. Or else Kreinik braid #4 or maybe even
Kreinik cord (not cable; it's pretty hard to work with--about like
284Z). Martha Beth
