I can't find this and it doesn't seem to be listed on DMC's website. Can
anyone tell me if this is the same as DMC's metallic floss 5282????

Thanks

Bernie

It's actually DMC's 5284 metallic floss, 284Z is on a spool and not always
easy to find.

but they can be used interchangeably on patterns....or you may want to check
out Petite Braid.

Just to set the record straight: DMC's metallic floss is NOT the same
as the Z threads. DMC just keeps messin' with my embroidery in the U.S.
by discontinuing very high-quality products. :-(

Very true Dianne, the quality is far from the same, I bought a couple of
spools a few months ago, and haven't found any since. It's easier to find
the 5284 but the quality is inferior.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I understood the Z threads tarnished over
time? I have several spools, and have been reluctant to use 'em.

DMC has 2 different shades of gold--one is 5282 and the 5284.

I have used the "Z" threads, both silver and gold, in crochet and
embroidery. In the crochet pieces I did (key fobs), they got daily
handling and lots of it, as well as numerous washing. Yes, they did
tarnish. A better word was "wear out faster than the cottons".

On the pieces I did (ornaments) that got no handling, I had no problem,
including the gold star (crochet) that I did about 12 years ago. Last
year I noticed it had darkened and was not as shiny.

Since I've never used any other metallic thread other than Guterman's -
which is a fine sewing thread - I cannot speak for what others will do.
I didn't use the metallics on anything that was going to be around for a
long time.

At the same time, I have worked experimentally with the new metallic
flosses and just despise them - both for their color "zing", their bulk,
and their ease of handling. Others may have a different opinion.

Have used Kreinik only on a limited basis.

Personally, I don't care for either of the DMC metallics. Even with Thread
Heaven they are a royal pain to work with.

I will go with Kreinick over DMC anyday. I haven't tried the Petite Treasure
braids, but have heard they are wonderful....maybe next trip to LNS....

My local ACMoore store had quite a few spools of 284Z last Saturday when I
visited. If anyone is interested, email me and I will be glad to purchase some
for you.
