Great idea! My favorite cross-stitch and counted thread stores in my area are:
1) Tapestry of Dreams, Johnston, RI.
The owner is wonderful and very friendly. Her focus is on samplers, both
antique reproductions and modern samplers. She has a lot of Kreinik Soie
D'Alger and sells many of them by the meter.
2) Stitches in Time, Pembroke, MA.
I have only been there once so far but I came out much poorer than I went
in. They custom cut their fabric at unusually low prices.
3) The Sampler, Groton, CT.
I was impressed with their selection of charts, which included a lot of
things I haven't seen anywhere else (especially British charts).
4) Thistle Needleworks, Glastonbury, CT.
I have been really aggravated by staff people on more than one occasion
but they have every fiber and fabric (all on the bolt) I have ever heard
of. It's a HUGE store-- they also carry needlepoint stuff.
5) Picket Fence, Mansfield, MA.
An all-around pretty good shop. Good selection of fabrics and fibers.
Some of the staff are more pleasant than others.
Sigh... thinking about all these lovely places makes me want to go shopping.

Nordic Needle

These are in order only as far as local stores and mail order. Ann
Opinions expressed herein are my own and may not represent those of my employer.
1. Ginger's Needlearts and Framing, Austin, Texas
best selection of fabric and floss with the
friendliest and very knowledgeable staff.
2. Stitches N More, Spring, Texas
very nice selection of charts, threads,
and wonderfully framed examples.
3. The Stitchery, Bryan, Texas
nice selection of Texas Aggie charts but
rather a hodge podge of other items with
variable staff. (You never know who's
going to be working there--there's always
someone new).
Mail Order:
1. Sundance Needleworks, Tucson, Arizona
fantastic selection of Southwestern style
canvases and an incredibly helpful staff.
I found them to be the inspiration for doing
Christmas stockings in every fiber *but*
wool and every stitch *but* basketweave!

My first time de-cloaking (yes, I'm a trekki too!)Here's my two favourite
stores for CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA (home of the STAMPEDE)
County Cottage Needleworks Carol and John Schmold
301 - 14 Street, NW
Calgary, AB
The Purple Needle Marilynn and Shelley
14 - 222 16 Avenue, NE
Calgary, AB
Both of these place are easy to get to from the TransCanada highway, and
they're definitely worth a drop in. The Country Cottage has some unique
designs by local talent, and also carries UNIQUE (and WONDERFUL) frames
for your designs. They (Carol and John) are both extremely creative and
very talented. Check
1) The Running Stitch in Cupertino, CA.
One of the best that I have seen. She carries finishing items.
Lots of different fibers. Almost every book known to man.
2) The Stitching Post in Catonsville, MD.
So far this is the BEST shop I have ever been in. (DS lives in Silver
Spring). Very helpful staff. I can't think of anything she doesn't
carry.
3) Dutch Treat Needlecrafts in Livermore, CA.
I have just discovered this shop and need to explore it further, but
she seems to be equivalent to The Running Stitch.
Mail Order:
The Nordic Needle - fast, efficient and very helpful. Delightful people to work
with and carry almost everything. Hardanger specialist!

Thanks for sharing your favorites...I recently moved to NH from Texas
and would love to know where in NH the Yankee Cross Stitch is located.
I haven't found a favorite here yet...I'm in Hampstead, in far
southeastern NH, but will travel for a great shop.

I also still mourn the loss of The Status Thimble in Burlingame, CA. That
was the store which first hooked me on stitching 21 years ago. And yes,
before some writes, I know there is still a store by that name in
Burlingame, but it has entirely different owners and is not even close to
what it use to be--kind of like a four star eatery being taken over by
McDonald's. ;-ลข

For those familiar with the old "Crossed Stitch" this is the same store
under new management. Joyce is wonderful carries a large selection of
charts fabric and floss. Keeps a good stock of all new charts and gets
all needed supplies for new things in a very timely manner. She also does
mail order and iswilling to order any chart still in print. I am not an
employee there- but did work there when it was the "crossed stich" Joyce
has taken a very good store and improved on it!!

Stitches and More
Old Town Spring
Houston, TX
Many, many charts, well-arranged and easy to find.
Frames, stands, lights, beads, ceramic buttons,
specialty threads, and nearly every kind of even-
weave fabric you can imagine. Also--open Sunday!
The only down-side of this is that Old Town Spring
is very crowded and it's hard to find a place to
park anywhere nearby.

My old shop. I always stop in when I go home for a

choices of frames/stands/lights, but I'm sure they'd
be happy to order.

Jamie,
I haven't been to Yankee Cross Stitch, so I can't comment on the shop,

Re: the Celebration of Needlework in Merrimack....is it being held at
Needles Crossing, which is in Merrimack? Probably, huh?
Another shop worth traveling for is in Salem, MA. called It's a Crewel
World. Carolyn Hook is the owner and the focus of the shop is cross
stitch and needlepoint. I discovered this treasure about six years ago
as she was preparing to move her location. Now, once again, It's a
Crewel World is moving. She's going to a spot which has about 5 times
the space she now has.......it's a major decision and I hope that it goes
well for her.
For anyone who knows the area, it's the former location of the Daniel
Low Jewelry Co. Salem is well known for being the sight of the Witch
Trials and has lots of tourist traffic. The jeweler has left his
mahogany and glass display cases and that should be interesting.
She plans on having LOTS of trunk shows and classes. I work from 3 to
11 pm and was quite pleased to hear that she'll be offering classes in
Hardanger during the day!
She carries a varied line of flosses and fibers and I've never gone in
there "looking" without finding something I "had" to have!
If all goes well, it should happen over the first two weeks in May.
Usual disclaimers apply.

Stitch in Time

(Hi Charlene and Teresa, if either of you are lurking!)
The owner, Charlene, is incredibly helpful! Stitch in Time is in an old
house (Victorian style?) and has an amazing variety of charts and all
kinds of fabrics and fibers. I hear about stuff on the newsgroup and then
I hunt them down at Stitch in Time. She almost always has it and if she
doesn't, she'll order it. I don't shop anywhere else (except for really
great floss sales at Jo-Ann Fabrics). On top of that she's got great
doodads for putting stitching onto (all kinds of towels, boxes, mugs,
etc.). She also has tons of knitting stuff, an expanding needlepoint
section and offers custom framing. Oh yeah, she also has scroll frames,
Q-snaps and lap and floor stands (including Artisan designs, my personal
favorite). Great store!

The Celebration of Needlework is in Manchester, NH, not in Merrimack.
I'm part of the organizing group, and although we haven't made
specific plans for rctn'ers, the Presidential Parlor is available all
day and night throughout the weekend for stitchers to relax and put
your feet up and chat and stitch! If you'd like to plan a special
time to meet, just say when!!
Some of the classes are filled, but there's still space in others and
you'll be able to sign up on-site if you see one you like. There will
be Make-It-Take-It's in the Merchandise Mall area all three days, plus
door prizes drawn randomly throughout the weekend. I hope I'll get to
meet a lot of you there!!
If you need more information on this, look at our web page. All the
classes are listed. Classes 2, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18 and 21 don't have
any space left, but all the others do (some with just 1-2 places) and
Eileen Bennett's Flax Sampler on Sunday was so popular, we've added it
again on Friday from 5 to 9:45 pm.
Please feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any questions. I'll
be glad to help.

Trouble,
I have lived in Killeen, TX (Fort Hood) and here's what I have:
In Temple there is a store called Snooky's Knit Nook. She carries cross
stitch and needlepoint. In Killeen, you will find Skyline Gallery which
specializes in cross stitch and quilting along with a nice framing dept.
this particular is for sale at the moment, but the owners are still
optimist that they will be able to sell the store rather than close it
down. If you would like addresses and phone numbers, I'll be happy to
give you that. E-mail me at fl...@gte.net and I'll dig them up. Best of
luck to you with your move.
