Is Elsa Williams still designing and where might I find her things?
I would be interested in hearing what other things she has done and
other Williamsburg things since I am here now. I made a trip up to the
gift shop and didn't see any.....barbara

Barbara-

Elsa Williams died several years ago but her designs were or are still
being produced and distributed as kits - I think by Johnson Creative
Arts in W. Townsend, MA.

I have several of her beautiful crewel kits bought in the early days of
my needlework addiction still stored in a big wicker trunk to be done
someday.....

I thought she had done crewel. I think I produced a wreath of crewel
she designed back in the early l980's. barbara

I believe Elsa Williams died a couple of years ago. Last December
at the JCS seminar in Williamsburg I saw several of her kits in the
bookstore at the Visitors Center. Some of them were available as
leaflets as well as kits but the one I wanted "The Seasons of
Williamsburg" was only kit :-(. However the kits do contain linen
and pre-sorted floss. I plan to attend this year's seminar and am
looking forward to spending more time in that bookstore.

They still sell Elsa Williams crewel kits, if you can find them! I did one for
my sister, and have one to do for myself - a gorgeous bellpull. (If I ever get
over being intimidated by it!)

Neat! I must have looked in the wrong place! Which seminar are you
taking now? I really need to look into these. It is so silly not to do
it while I am here. I only do petitpoint but I am sure there would be
some new things to learn that would be applicable!
We have only been here a month so have only been up there 2 times. I am
sure I will really enjoy that book store! It did look great. I am
going to the Book Convention there as I am a bibliophile!!!! I have
hit all of the rare book shops already... Barbara

Barbara, the JCS needlework seminar is in it's tenth year at
Williamsburg. The teachers this year are Eileen Bennett, Merry Cox
and Joanne Harvey. They always seem to be sampler classes (which
suits me just fine! ;-) ). The seminar is held the first weekend in
December, beginning on Thursday evening and continuing through
Sunday noon. Last year was my first year and it was great!. There
is a commuter's price for the seminar which IIRC is about half since
a lot of the cost is for the hotel room. I envy you living right
there at Williamsburg. I love the Tidewater area of Virginia.
Cheers.

Hi Barbara

Write to Johnson Creative Arts, Inc. they bought out Elsa Williams when she
retired to California. They still do put out some of her designs in kits.
They have a catalog and will send it to you. Address is: 445 Main Street, West
Townsend, MA 01474.

They also bought the building that was used as a school. Some of the pieces in
the building were auctioned off. What she did herself is still there.

At one time I was going to attend her her school but never got there. Some
months ago I found the catalogs that she sent out containing information about
her school and what was being taught. Her designs were lovely. She is one of
the old timers. There are not too many left.

Happy Stitching

I too have a couple of Elsa Williams designs put away, both on Irish linen.
One is a bell pull and the other a tree of life. Have all the crewel wool to
do them with as well. Wonder if I'll ever get them done....maybe someday?

The collection of samplers is not to be missed in the museum there.
I too am feeling very blessed to be here. We are here for a full 3
years with my husband's business so I have time to explore and EAT
seafood!!!!! I am afraid I no longer do samplers so the technique is
probably not all that useful for my work now... It does sound really
really fun though!!!!!!!!!!!barbara

I'm working (when I work on it) on an Elsa Williams needlepoint that I've had
for about 13 or so years. I decided to get it out and thought I would enjoy
working on a bigger count than 28 or 32. =)
