OK, I admit it....I tried out for Jeopardy once. :)
Now, this was several years ago, their method of auditioning may have
changed, but this is what happened to us.....
I can't recall now exactly how many people were in our group....50, I
think. We were ushered in and allowed to take seats in the audience
seating area of the soundstage where Jeopardy is filmed (I got *that*
close to the set! LOL!). Then we were given answer sheets for the
written portion, which is the first step in the audition. They had the
questions pop up on monitors just like they would during the game, and
Alex's voice reading them. You didn't have to write down everything in
the form of a question, just make sure you get the right answer! You
have approximately 5 seconds to come up with and write down your
answer, then they announce the next topic and read the next question.
The topics vary widely and range across the more common topics they
have, things like Business and Industry, Women in History, Potpourri,
etc.
I believe there were 100 questions in all. You then handed in your
sheets and the show drones go off to grade your papers (just like
school!). Oh, and you wrote not only your name and city, but also were
expected to say a little bit about yourself on the form, why you
wanted to be on the show, something unusual about yourself, that kind
of thing.
You have to score VERY high to make it on to step 2. I am not a slouch
at trivia (if I say so myself) and I know what my score was because I
knew most of the answers...I scored about 94 or 95 out of 100. I did
not make the cut to round 2. I don't know what their exact criteria
is, if they only take people who score a certain amount or above, I
know a few people from our group did go on to the next step, but I
don't know if people from every group go on or if there is a
possibility that they could have whole groups who flunk.
FWIW, I heard that the second step of the audition process was a
mock-up game where you "played" using bells to ring in, and that in
this case they were not only looking for speed and knowledge, but
enthusiasm and personality. So if you make it to step 2, smile a lot
and look perky. <g>
Good luck!

I've been and I qualified in June... Now I'm just waiting for Alex to call me
to come to california.
There's a great site out there on the web by Carl someone or other - gee,
that's a brain fart for you right now! He was the highest one-day total winner
in the history of the show. Anyhow he has a great tip!
All I can say is be prepared! It's a 50 question test -- they show the answers
on a video monitor and you have to write the answers down (not in question form
though!) Those who pass this test get to play the mock game. When I took it
the cut off was 35 right out of the 50, but I've heard that number changes.
(They don't tell you how many you get right, just if you make the cut. I kept
track and missed about 4...)
Once you make the mock game, be perky and excited. They are looking to see how
you would be on TV. Remember to keep the pace of the game quick and answer in
the form of a question!
And look on the chair for a tag or something before you sit down --- they do
give door prizes!

I can just see it now..."I'll take DMC for $200"
Alex says: "Christmas red"
Nancy says: "what is 321?"
"Cross stitch for $400"
Alex says: "Nordic Needle"
Nancy says: "What is the most anticipated mail of the year?"
"Cross stitch for $200"
Alex says: "Chocolate"
Nancy says: "What is not absolutely necessary to cross stitch, but *is*
necessary to life and happiness?"
"Designers for $200"
Alex says: "Lavender and Lace"
Nancy says: "Who is MLI?"
Ahhh....if only they played the game *our* way!!!

Congratulations! I'll be looking for you. I love Jeopardy! I get so excited
when I get an answer right! You would think I was actually winning money!
LOL.
How did you go about registering?

My daughter tried out for the high school version when she was a junior. They
tested 200 in one group and another 200 a few hours later. Out of the 400,
only 1 student was asked to continue! And no, it was not Sarah!
She enjoyed the experience and still loves the show, as do her mom and dad.
Hope you emerge as a contestant. Let us know when you will be on the air!

Disorganization is merely the sign of a very healthy
individual trying to do more in a shorter period of time
than those lazy, obsessively tidy types who can think of
nothing better to do than straighten objects in drawers
and stuff like that which only feeds their own egos and makes
them think they are better than those of us who are truly gifted.
