Our Friend has curated an Exhibition with Georgian handcrafts [
embroidery weaving applique,
At the opening the leading lady showed us slides with [ mainly
religious] embroideries richly worked with silk satins , gold and
silver and even sometimes pearls , All the Big embroideries [about 50
cm up to 150 +, showed scenes from Jesus going to heaven or being
crucified ,,,, She kept calling them SHROUDS , but of course they were
not shrouds , she said they would be hung in church at certain times
in the year, Would anyone have aproper [ English ] name for them ,
She also showed slides of small [ about 2020 to 30 30 cm ] of richly
embroidered cloth she kept calling Airs ????
anyone could help , Georgians are Orthodox Greek . mirjam

In article <3a131193...@news.actcom.co.il>,

Our church calls our colored wall hangings that change with the seasons
of the liturgical year 'paraments'. The dictionary definition of
parament is 'a liturgical hanging', but most people I have known
elsewhere have used it only for the small hangings on the pulpit,
lecturn, and altar/communion table. These also frequently change color
with the seasons, and are, indeed, 20 - 30 cm.

There are also several other cloths used in some (mostly Catholic)
churches to cover the bread/wafers and the chalice for communion. These
all have names, and would be about the right size, but my church doesn't
use them, so I don't know.
