Hi,

Could one of you people who've recommended It's A Crewel World on the net
answer a few questions for me? First of all, I heard they had moved and I
only have the old address, so I need the new address and phone number. If
anyone is able and willing to tell me store hours and give directions from
any interstate highway (north- or east-bound; I'm going from Providence,
RI) I would really appreciate it, since you'd be saving me a long distance
call.

Also, does anyone know what their fiber selection is like? I am just
getting into counted canvas and need some Rainbow Gallery fibers and a few
other hard-to-find things. I'd like to pick my own colors so I don't want
to mail order.

TIA,
Lana Holden

I was in Salem in September and remember that the store is within walking
distance from the Peabody-Essex Museum. Unfortuntely, they were closing
as I got there so I can't tell you anything about what they had--looked
nice through the window.

Lana,

I was there this summer and their phone number is the same. They are
on the "mall" area of what I suppose is downtown. It is within
walking distance of the Peabody Essex Museum on, I beleive Essex
street. It is also not terribly far from the Salem witch Musuem. I
only visited but it is well worth the trip. Have fun!

I was there while on holiday from the UK. It was in October. It is a
lovely shop and well worth a journey.

It is on the main thoroughfare which runs at right angles to the street
with the Peabody-Essex musem.

Hi! Just to add my $0.02, I moved up from D.C. about 6 months ago and
these people are some of the friendliest and most helpful folks I've met.
Also the store is visually lovely!

I've lost the original post to which I'm responding. I don't have the
latest address for It's A Crewel World, but I have a vague idea of where
they've moved to. They were on Essex Street, and I think they're still on
Essex Street, just a few blocks away. If you're standing in the pedestrial
mall area of Salem, facing the Peabody-Essex Museum (great museum), turn
to your right and walk 1/2 block to 2 blocks, and you should find the
store. I *have not* tried this, because they moved after I left
Massachusetts, but I think that's where they moved. Their phone number
was (508) 745-9696, and I'd think it would be the same. They had a great
selection of fibers; I think the owner wrote a conversion guide to fibers,
but I don't remember exactly what they had. I remember that they had a
few (but not many) painted canvases, some blank canvas, lots of neat
accessories, and a lot of counted canvas and cross stitch patterns. Some
kits, also. I'm sorry that I can't give directions to Salem: my
directions would be something like "Go north on that highway, then take
that side highway that I think might go to Newburyport, then take that
exit for Salem, then follow an awful lot of small signs towards old Salem,
then drive around in circles for a little while." Sorry: I've only been
to Salem a couple of times. Maybe someone else on this NG could give
directions, or maybe if you call It's a Crewel World, they could direct
you.

From Providence, take I-95 north -- either go around Boston on I-95/128
or take I-93 through the city. Even though it is further, I find it is
usually faster to go around since there is almost always a lot of
traffic on I-93. When I-95 and 128 split in Danvers, stay on 128. Take
the Lowell Street exit (don't know number). Turn right at the end of
the ramp. Stay on Lowell Street through Peabody. Shorthly after you
pass McDonald's on the right, you enter Salem. Turn left at the light
onto Route 107 (Bridge Street) -- there's a Dunkin Donuts on one corner
and an empty lot on another. The last time I was there (about 6 weeks
ago), there was a lot of road construction. Stay on 107, going under
Route 114, then you come to a weird rotary -- turn right at the Rotary
(don't know name of street). Essex Street is about two blocks down.
Crewel World is a 231 Essex Street in the Daniel Lowe Building, at the
corner of the street you're driving down. Park on the street you're
driving on.

Phone number is 508-745-9696.

They have most Rainbow Gallery threads.

Let me know if you need more information.

(sorry to post this, but I don't have the original message from Lana and
her email address isn't in this one.)

I havent senn this info yet--so I'll add my .02 as well----

Its A Crewel World is owned by Carolyn Hook. She's a wonderful designer
and I don't think I could stitch without her book "Fiber Fantasy".

She said her store was 5000 sq feet---what a dream!!!!

I was there a few months ago to teach some needlepoint classes. Before
Carolyn bought the store and moved her shop, we were in California and
she pulled out these photos to show me. Ever since that time, it was
like seeing a child born.

Carolyn is a dear friend of mine and her "Side Kick" Andrew is a
"fixture in Salem. His displays and windows are to die for. The store is
lovely...has a grand staircase and all antique fixtures. I got a grand
tour by Carolyn who has not even explored many of the rooms in the
building. It is a historic building, the Daniel Low building which was a
jewelry and China shop and the oldest mail order firm in the US. It was
also the First Meeting House in Salem. Parts of the building are over
300 years old. The fixtures are all antique and there is still a Tube
System in the store whch sends your payment to a central room where the
cashier makes the change and sends it back down to you in the tubes.
They use registers now but can use the tubes.

The second floor are class rooms and a grand ballroom where she holds
fashion shows for the knitters and classes in a wonderful open space.
then the third floor which is a mezzanine. The chandaliers are huge and
many.

Look, if you are ever in the area...go to Salem and visit the shop. I
have been in many shops across the US but have never been in a larger
one. The shop carries everyting from cross stitch to needlepoint, every
thread or yarn under the sun, accessories and knitting.

You will love it!!!!
