Hello everyone..I'm lurking as I rarely post. I am going to Toronto this
weekend and I recall that there was a new cross stitch store opening up
in Scarborough area. I hope that I'm in the right spot. Would anyone
with directions or addresses of nice T.O. area stores please email me.
Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Catherine -- the new store in the Scarborough area is

Kate's Cross Stitch
2256 Birchmount St. (just south of Sheppard, on the west side of Birchmount)
tel: 416-291-5225

This is a new LNS, so stock levels are not yet too high, but she does have some good stuff.

If you are looking for Needlepoint, there is

The Needlework and Yarn Shop
2615 Eglinton Ave. East (south side of Eglinton, between Brimly and McCowan)
Scarborough
tel: 416-266-1245

AND, only about 15 minutes north, there is

The Tranquility Shop
3 Joseph Street  (just east of Markham Rd/hwy 48, north of hwy 7)
Markham
tel: 416-294-6407

If you have time for a trip to the west end of Toronto, then I'd highly recommend:

Gitta's (www.gittas.com )
271 Lakeshore Rd. East
Mississauga
tel: 905-274-7198

There are other stores further to the west ... The Silver Thimble, in Oakville, and The Needle Gnome in Acton ... both of these have good cross stitch supplies as well.

But, if you have time for only 1 store, and don't mind the drive -- Gitta's is my 1st choice -- lots of fibers, tons of fabrics (Zweigart), charts, kits, buttons, bell pull hardware,  ... you name it ...

Enjoy your trip to Scarberia ....

Another excellent shop is "The Sampler" at 598 Brown's Line (south on
Hwy 426 below the QEW. Phone 416-255-4410.

Just so you know, I have a peripheral connection to the shop - I stitch
models for them, and occasionally work for them at the needlework shows.

The Enchanted Needle is also a fairly new shop, opened at their present
location last November. Still stocking up but I haven't failed yet to
find something I need/want. Closed Sundays and Mondays(?), I can't
remember the hours for the rest of the days.

3850 Steeles Ave. West, Unit 5
Woodbridge
905 264 9265

North east corner of Steeles and Weston Road.

I am new to this board and this message jumped out at me.

Why is it that you only commented on the inventory of one store? I am
from out of town and am wondering.

Other stores that I mentioned have been around for longer periods of
time, and have lots of stock. New stores have to grow slowly to
actually survive, so Kate's is doing the right thing; but, that said, if
someone is visiting for only 1 day and has to choose 1 place to visit,
then, they might prefer an "established" store -- even if they have to
travel a little bit further. I was only trying to provide enough
information to help make an "informed" decision.

No one has mentioned The Nimble Thimble, which is at Yonge & Lawrence
(upstairs over a Pizza Pizza). They are pretty all-round, and carry
smocking supplies as well, but at least they are easy to reach by TTC
(as opposed to Gitta's which I agree is excellent).
