I'll be up there (from Washington, D.C.) 9/5-9/8 and would love to
check out new shops.
thanks to all my fellow addicts!

Erica Wilson, 717 Madison Ave. (212) 832-7290 VERY pricey, but gorgeous.
My absolute favorite for many years, but better for NP than for XST. The
well-trained staff are quite nice even if you don't drop megabucks or are
just window shopping. Warning: their displays of accessories can be
hazardous to your wallet.
Joan's Needlecraft Studio, 240 E. 29th st. (212) 532-7129 Small, packed,
extensive but weird selection (I find it very interesting). People can be
very nice or very brusque depending on the day. Not cheap, but Manhattan
prices are uniformly high. (The bargains are in Brooklyn.) I have found
some great pickings in their bargain bin.
Rita's Needlepoint, 150 E. 79th St. (212) 737-8613 Nice, not great, but
worth a look. I've only been there once, but the people were helpful.
Stitches East, 55 E. 52nd st. (212) 421-0112 Knitting and NP. Lovely
selection of yarns but nothing for xst. Good custom canvases. (IMHO the
best knitting shop.) Lessons.
Wallis Meyers, 30 E. 68th. (212) 861-5318 Very classy, nice selection,
friendly and knowledgeable staff. If I lived up there I'd spend a lot of
time in it.
There are a few others, but I haven't been in them. You might check the
Yellow pages, too.
Happy hunting!
Manhattan is not great for needlework, but give these a try:
Rita's Needlepoint
150 E. 79th
737-8613
Joan's Needlecraft Studio
240 E. 29th
532-7129
However, the best place for stitchery in the area, by far, is Angel's
Landing on Staten Island. They have just about anything you can think
of. It is listed in the Manhattan Yellow Pages, but I can't find my
book. It's a trek, but you do get to take the Staten Island Ferry.
>Does anyone know of any x-stitch/needlepoint shops in Manhattan?
Check the phone book for exact locations:
Joan's around 28th Street and 2nd Avenue -- small shop, xs and
needlepoint.
Rita's 79th Street, 2 doors east of Lexington Ave, 2nd floor --
needlepoint, gorgeous hand-painted canvases
Erica Wilsons Lexington Avenue, not far from Bloomingdales, 2nd floor
-- needlepoint
Joan's is an okay store, but not much special.
Rita's has fantastic canvases. Expensive.
I haven't been to Erica Wilson's in a long time. My previous visits
were greeted with attitude problems, so I'm not inclined to go back.
They do have a large selection of canvases, which you may not find
elsewhere. It's probably a good place to visit, but I wouldn't want
to live there, if you know what I mean :-)
Unfortunately, Manhattan does not have many needlework stores, and I
have been to better and nicer ones in almost any other city.

Where in Brooklyn? (since I live in Brooklyn...)

I do best at the Rag Shop, 1260 60th St. DMC on sale is 5/$1, good prices
on fabrics though not much selection. I like Charles Craft and they carry
plenty of it, so I don't complain. You can also get aida off the bolt.
They also have a broad range of craft supplies, so if you live by the glue
gun you'll make out here. Their # is (718) 871-8580. They're in the
Borough Park shopping center. From Park Slope you can take the Coney
Island bus and change for the #9, or take the B train. If you get on their
mailing list they'll notify you of all the sales. Happy hunting......oh,
all the usual disclaimers apply. I've checked out several other shops,
but this was the least expensive that had the whole range of DMC.

Allright - who here is from Park Slope? Come on... fess up because you've
got a very active stitching neighbor... :)
Susan P.
I'm in the Park Slope/Windsor Terrace area, between Greenwood Cemetary and the park.

I grew up in Park Slope - 3rd St between 7th & 8th Aves. - does that
count? I have to confess that I'm now a Manhattan (got there by way of
Connecticut!)
