During the last few months I have come across references to self-published
books on needlepoint written by Mindy English and Jane Zimmerman. I was
wondering if any of you have seen these books and could let me know a bit
about their content. I ask because since I started fiddling around with
designing my own stitches I have started collecting other books with
stitch collections or that present particular approaches to needlepoint
(like Anna Strite-Kurtz (spell?) and Jean Hilton). I do this partially to
get new ideas and partially out of fear that I will "create" a stitch that
I really like and will then find that it's been lurking happily in
someone's book under another name (am I pedantic about this 'er wot?
Comes of working in a university I guess.) Anyway, I'm busy diagramming
my stitches and making gif images out of them, so one day I will put them
up on the web perhaps.
What I was wondering is are these books, by English and Zimmerman,
collections of less usual stitches or are they more books that start at
square one ("this is a tent stitch") and only include a few unusual
stitches. Your comments and recommendations would be greatly
appreciated.....since nobody else in my family gets the hint when it comes
to books, I've put them on my personal Christmas list!
Thanks!

If you go to http://www.needlenook.com and search under Needlepoint and
Stitchery Books, you can find brief annotations for the Mindy English
books.

I have the Mindy English book that I purchased in 1986. I have used it often
as a reference and referred many friends to it. It is truly a monster
book...and I mean that kindly. It is divided into sections based on the type
of stitch (e.g., plaited stitches, web stitches, eyelets, etc.). She starts
with the basic stitch and goes from there....for example I think she has 8-10
pages on scotch stitches. If you can find it, it is a treasure.
Can't remember what I paid for it and there is no price on it! It's a great
reference even tho' I no longer do any needlepoint only counted thread
embroidery!
