This evening and tomorrow may be a good time for people in the
mid-Atlantic US to look for sun dogs when the sun is within a few
hours of setting or rising.
Spread out your fingers with your hand outstretched. Put your thumb
over the sun (don't stare at the sun; this is approximate), and the
sun dogs would be a little way off of your little finger. They are
bright areas of sunlight concentrated through ice crystals and will
appear white, yellow, gold, and sometimes other colors. There is no
problem staring at the sun dogs, but don't stare at the sun.
