Hi! I just have to say that I never had a rotation before (thinking that I
would get distracted and not get any of the projects done, LOL), but now I
have been converted!

I only have 2 in rotation, but it seems to work: One is a Harry Potter
design (from the french DMC book). It is pretty simple stitching, with
large blocks of single colors. The other is the Henry VIII and wives
sampler from DMC, which is a HUGE chart, small symbols, and frequent color
changes. I don't know how the rest of you do yours, but what I do is
simple: I stitch on one of them until I am tired of that kind of stitching,
and then I go to the other for a while. It's reallly working--I'm enjoying
both of them, instead of getting aggravated :-)

So how do the rest of you with rotations handle them?

I work on them depending on the "due date". I am currently focusing on
one project that was supposed to be done for Christmas. However, I have
several that are in various stages of completion - none with specific
due dates. Those, I work on as the mood strikes me.

I've never tried a stitching rotation before -- I usually work on a piece
until it's finished. But I do rotate crafts (sewing, cross-stitch,
occassional Plastic Canvas, scrapbooking, cake decorating, etc.) and have
several projects going at one time.

Usually, I do a weekly rotation. Friday night I change to a new project and
work on it whenever I can until the following Friday night when I pull out a
new WIP. I find that this keeps me interested in the different WIPs and I find
that I actually finish them. That said, I have been working exclusively on
TW's Wedding Sampler for about a month, as DD is getting married June 1 and I
am bound and determined to have this thing (framed of course) on the table with
her cake and ring pillow - which by the way she is doing herself in handanger -
the pillow not the cake!

I have just started using a rotation and I love doing my projects this way. I
am using the method described on the Shakespeare's Peddler website which is 10
hours on each project. I downloaded a free program called Punchclock (thanks
Sally) for my Palm Pilot and it keeps track of just how many minutes I work on
each project. Right now I am working on four. Two are small and two are large.
If you have a lot of UFO's I would really suggest trying this method. I am
finally going to finish more than one project a year! LOL

Here is the website:

Scroll down and find the article "No More UFO's"

If you want the Punchclock program the website is:

I do pretty much the same as you, stitch until I'm ready to move onto
something else. When I get tired of the project I'm on I then set a
goal. For example I'm on my Celestial Dragon rotation right now and am
ready to move on to something else. So I've set my goal as finishing
up the blue in the area I'm working on before I switch out. I've tried
doing a week or a certain number of hours. I'm awful of keeping track
of my time and don't always stitch the same number of hours in any one
week, so I prefer the stitch until you get sick of it method. Plus I
throw some small projects in every once in a while. Right now I'm
working on a Pam Kellogg Cardinal Valentine freebie for DD's teacher
and I'll do that til I'm done.

On the "long term" projects--I keep 3 going at all times. Each one gets a
month allotted then the next one in line comes out. I keep track by an index
card taped inside my plano box.

I have to admit that I tried a rotation. It doesn't work well for me.
What I have found is that with small to medium size projects I'm
better off just finishing them. Otherwise I get distracted and never
come back to those projects. I do, however, find that with large
projects or complicated projects that I may do something really quick
and simple (like a bookmark) about 1/4 through and then every quarter
thereafter. it helps a lot.

Hi Julie!
I don't rotate since I like to work on a piece until it's finished. However..
occasionally.. I need that gratification of actually finishing something so I do
a little project to completion before going back to a big project. Of course
that changes too when I'm working on something for a reason. For instance, at
the moment, I'm stitching a Samurai for DH. It's my project. But then a pair
of friends is getting married in July so I'm doing an "easy" project for them..
but, recently, I've been needing that gratification of finishing something so
I'm doing the TW freebie Stretch dragon. When I finish that, I'll finish the
wedding thing and go back to working on the Samurai until I find that I need to
do something little and quick again!

I have 8 pieces going in my rotation! I stitch on a different one each day!
I'm almost finished with Come and Share a Pot of Tea by Lorri
Birmingham....I stitch this piece on Mondays, so I think I'll finish it,
today! One of the 8 pieces I stitch on from the time I get up until noon
each day...then I pick up the piece for that particular day and stitch on
it! I really like doing it this way! If I don't get to stitch that
particular day, I skip it and the following week pick it up, again! I never
get bored with a piece, this way! :-)))

How long do you normally stitch each day, Robin?

I am studying for a City & Guilds in Creative Embroidery at the moment which
means that my rotation system is in a mess! I have things that I have to
complete for my course, things I want to complete for myself, things I want
to complete for other people and other stuff! To date I have 1 unfinished
jumper, 2 unfinished crochet baby blankets, 1 piece of fine crochet work, a
large Footprints xstitch, a large hollyhocks design in needlepoint, a large
hydrangea wool xstitch rug, a goldwork box, a stumpwork book cover .........
the list is endless! Maybe I should be doing something instead of reading
newsgroups?

I keep 3 in rotation. One big one in a floor stand at home, one
medium one for travel (worked well today at jury duty!) and a small
one to work on in the store, suitable for stops & starts. This system
works pretty well. I do find that leaving my projects lying around in
the store leads to me selling (and kitting up) those patterns more!

I am ever so glad rotation works for many of you but do need to reply here as
perhaps there are others like myself who need representation. I do not like to
rotate. I work on large hour amount projects or at times very intricate
projects that require set up and include over 100 colorways . I feel that
rotation on these take too much time for set up. Since I only have an hour a
day to work religiously on these , I do not want any set up. I want to sit
down and it is ready to work on .

A while back, I had 3 projects going: a big one (the Isaiah eagle), a
medium, & a small. The "small" ones were the free monthly gemstone
dragons. I worked on one each morning.

I have 6 projects in my rotation, not counting the crocheted baby afghan
(see below). I stitch in the evening while watching TV. I work on 1
project each week, actually 7 stitching evenings. There are times I do go
out! I keep a watch on the calendar if something has a deadline. The
reason I don't count the baby afghan is because I can only work on it for a
short period of time, as it bothers my hand. I used to work on only 1 until
finished, but never got to other projects that I wanted to do. I really
enjoy doing it this way.

I only have a psuedo rotation. I have a "larger" project which stays at
home (ok..occasionally goes with me when we go visit my family for the
weekend) and I have a "smaller" project that I usually work on at work.
Last year it was the monthy gemstone dragon freebies from Dragon Dreams,
currently it is one of MLI's free angels, next it might be a small kit or
something else. I also have other projects that I work on...currently
working on two scrapbooks, two I Spy quilts and some crochet placemats.

I work on one project a week. My weeks are so crazy that keeping track of hours
would make me even crazier! I usually change projects over the weekend as this
is when I have most of my stitching time. I have found that a rotation system
is getting me closer to getting things finished. My goal to be able to brag
about finishing one big project on this BB before Christmas. I stitch
veeeerrrryyyyy slow.

Right now I've got three projects in rotation. However, last year I
worked on Teresa Wentzler's English Garden Sampler and didn't have any
other projects going on at the time. It's piece with lots of
confetti/specialty stitches and I just wanted to get it DONE. I only
stitch in my spare time, so it still took nearly a year to complete.

I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to setting up a stitching rotation. I
think I've started about 6 of them in the past year. Obviously haven't found
the right one yet.

This time I'm trying to allow myself a "focus" piece while working on
others. And mine is set up more for days of the week than hours stitching.
My focus piece right now is Golfers (Lynne Nicoletti), so I work on it more
every second day, 3 days per week. Alternating days are filled with 1
larger-sized, 1 medium sized and 1 ornament project.

Now what happens when I mix another design in there, since I've got another
one to add in.... I'm not sure. Obviously this routine isn't working out.
So I'm contemplating trying the same thing using a 5-hour rule. Meaning 5
hours per project, alternating between my focus piece and the others.

I think the key to a rotation is deciding what works for you. And what I've
discovered with my many varieties of rotations is that what works for you
can change quickly. The most important thing for me is to have fun. So if
that means that I get absorbed by one project and do it full force, then so
be it. My guy would like me to work 24-7 on Golfers since he's got a place
marked out on his office wall for it already ! I love the piece, but
decided to do it at 18 ct., which makes it hard to see in my poor lighting !
Maybe I should suggest he buy me an Ott Light ? LOL Good trade if you ask
me :)

That's basically what I do. Or I have some other reason to stop
working on A and to pick up B or C again. Currently, "A" is o-o on
20-count Lugana, while "B" is one over two with silks on 28-count
Lugana, and "C" is one over two on 32-count Lugana with GTFT.
