I just discovered this newsgroup yesterday, so I apologize if this is a
simple question. I saw a website that said the instructions for a cross
stitch project included stitching the face with 1 strand over 1 thread,
but if that was too difficult, alternate instructions covered 2 strands
over 2 threads. I always cross stitch my X's with 2 strands. Does this
mean using 1 strand, or is this a different technique?

Yes, this is exactly what this means. Instead of your usual two threads, you
use only one thread of floss. This is then stitched "over one thread" on an
evenweave fabric, where you usually stitch over two threads. These means
that you will be placing a stitch over every intersection of the threads in
the weave. This allows you to put quite a bit more detail in the design.

Hi Gary, I'm new too, to the newsgroup but I have your answer. And don't
worry, no question is simple. If we don't ask, we don't learn. Anyway,
when you stitch with 1 strand of floss over 1 fabric thread, you are
stitching on linen. It doesn't work if you try this on Aida as there are
several threads that make up a square on the fabric. I'm guessing you
stitch on Aida, am I correct? Anyway, It is called a petite stitch when
stitching with1 floss thread over 1 fabric thread on linen. If you are
stitching on a 28ct fabric, by stitching over 2 threads, you will have a
14ct stitch. (divide the count in half and that is the size of your
stitch). When stitching over 2 threads of the fabric you will have a center
hole for your needle to go into when you have quarter stitches. Its
wonderful to work on and your quarter stitches are always perfect. If you
haven't already tried linen, do think about it. A nice fabric to start with
is Quaker, it is a blend of cotton and linen. It has nice body to it and
looks elegant. You can also try Cashel which is 100% linen, but the weave
is slightly looser. Good luck!

Am I the only one who's never heard of one over one being called "petite
stitch"? Why are the rest of you keeping secrets from me? :-D
