Hi All!

A little bit ago a discussion came up on rctn about DMC floss vs. Anchor
floss and so on.

I posted something I had found out about DMC floss in Canada. I stated
that the DMC floss found in Canada is imported from France, hence
driving up the cost whereas DMC floss in the US is made in the US.

Some kind person (whose e-mail I have proceeded to lose) indicated to me
that this was not true. Since I didn't have any skeins of floss on hand
that weren't wound on bobbins, I couldn't disagree and figured my
instructor from the class I took was wrong.

But, I wandered off to Michaels this past weekend as they've got floss
on sale for 29 cents/skein and I had a look at the bands last night.
They all indicated that they were Made in France. I bought around 40 or
50 skeins of floss (at that price, they're a steal) and they all said
Made in France.

So, I'm wondering - was my instructor correct? What does the floss band
say on floss purchased in the US? I'm kinda curious now. I'd like to
know what's correct.

Just some idle musings.....

I bought some floss from Michael's yesterday. It was on sale for $.20 a skein,
and it too says "Made In France."

Hi Erica,
I just checked the bands on mine they say made in France on cotton dmc and
flower thread, and made in Mexico on the rayon floss.
None said made in US.

Hi Erica,

That was me posting in answer to your comments on DMC/Anchor floss.
As a full time business in the US needlework industry, I get to network
with many needlework companies directly, their reps and owners during
trade shows.
What I posted is what I've learned from these sources.
All my floss bands from DMC states it is made in France and my Anchor
states it's made in Germany.

Sometimes rumors get started and if repeated enough - unwittingly turn
into "fact". Always check your sources and ask if unsure.

On most of my floss, it says 'Not for sale outside the European
Union". On those that don't say this, it has some sort of instructions
in French. I 've always been under the impression that DMC is made in
France, no matter where it is sold.

Greetings from Bangkok!
I just had to check my floss since I purchase most of it here in
Thailand. The skein I'm looking at says 'For sale only outside the
European Union' and it is made in France. I always thought that all
DMC floss was made in France, regardless where it is sold. I'm sure,
however, that one can get the floss *much* cheaper in the US than in
France.

Regards.

All of my DMC floss, bought in the US, says made in France. Other types, I
think the DMC metallics, say made in Belgium.

All DMC regular floss is made in France. They do not make it anywhere else. "For sale only outside the European Union" is because they
have not paid the VAT on it. In the EU you have to pay the VAT. For outside the EU, it really depends on the duty that the has to paid.
Some countries consider floss as a luxury item. Especially silk. Import duties vary from country to country and can easilly double the cost
to the importer. The importer then adds on their profit. Then shipping to store that adds on their profit. Since profit is usally a
percentage of cost, the more duty the higher the amount added for profit all down the line. That is why the cost of DMC varies so much from
country to country. As for here in the USA, the large chains are willing to sell DMC at their cost or below to get you into the store,
hoping to get you to buy some big ticket item. They lose with me, cause if it's not on sale, I don't buy it, except for floss which my
local Michaels (Natick, MA) carries for 17 cents all the time. They used to be higher but a ACMoore opened up near it and their prices went
down. All other items come from LNS.
