Terri,
I know just how you feel!! I was out last night adding to my stash
and saw the flower fairies. I was delighted as I had planned on getting
a couple of them to do. I was so disappointed that I just walked away
:(

I saw them too! I almost got them, but decided for the price that I
could buy one of the Green Apple charts and have it stitched faster. And
like the finished product more. I've seen nice no-count kits, but these
weren't it.

Funny how, in my own personal Texas accent, "no-count" and "no-account"
share a pronunciation...

I saw the same kits at Walmart and was disappointed too when I
realized cross stitch was only an embellishment. Oh well, one less
thing I HAVE to have.

I felt the exact same way. So excited when I picked it up because I'd
been waiting for them *I have a coloring book a friend got me that has
all the flower fairy pictures in them* and then I thought....hmm
colored, ick. Then only the little bits to do? Triple ick. I didn't buy
them.

I like kits as much as I like leaflets *sometimes it is just easier for
me especially if the kits have a special color of fabric as the stores
here carry so little. Still looking for a deep purple if anyone sees an
aida in that and I have checked online places* I plan to, from having
heard that some hate kits and others love them, make my designs up with
both.

I saw the kits two weekends ago at my Walmart. I instantly liked them,
but in the back of my mind, I knew purists would be shaking their
heads in disapproval. I bought one of the smaller ones on the spot and
a couple of days later put 3 small ones and four larger ones in
layaway. Then I bought 2 more larger ones to take home. I know that
the cross-stitch is just an embellisment, but I think that the print
is fantastic. I've seen these same Victorian fairies pictures in
stores, and the print on the fabric alone is much more attractive.
Also, you could do as much embellishing on them as you want if you can
find the matching threads. I am also not a fan of kits as the threads
sometimes runs when you wash them and they never, ever give you enough
material. However, you can always substitute DMC threads that are a
close match and you should always substitute the material and save the
piece of material in the kit for a smaller project. It's just that
some kits have wonderful designs and are not available as just a
leaflet or book. I plan to get a couple of those Pooh kits later on
before they get gone, but I will probably use 18-count material
instead of the material in the kit.

Hello!

Does anyone know when the Flower Fairies books (not the various
patterns) where first published?

I'm asking because I just picked up _Flower Fairies of the Autumn_ at a
second-hand bookshop here in Stockholm. Irritatingly enough there is no
publication date in it. It *seems* to be the original edition, and from
the fact that the publisher (Blackie & Son) lists branches in England,
Canada and India, I suspect that it was at least issued before 1947.
It's in very good condition with an almost spotless dust-jacket, and I
paid almost nothing for it (c. GBP 3.6 / USD 5).

I've never really looked at these fairies before, but since there has
been so much talk about them here on RCTN, I couldn't resist buying it.
I really like some of the pictures (The Privet Fairy and The Nightshade
berry Fairy for example), but some of them are just too saccarinly cute
for my taste.

Does anyone know if they are available as satin stitch-patterns (or any
other non-counted technique), or do they only exist in xs? (As I said
before - I heartily dislike counting!) Or do I just have to do my own
adaption if I feel the urge to stitch any of them?

According the the biographical information I have: The first volume was
published in 1923, and Ms. Barker died in 1973.

According to the bibliographic information in the front of the ones I
have:

Flower Fairies of the Spring was first published in 1923.
Flower Fairies of the Summer was first published in 1925.
Flower Fairies of the Autumn was first published in 1926.
Flower Fairies of the Trees was first issued as Fairies of the Trees in
1940.
Flower Fairies of the Garden was first published in 1944.
The Fairy Necklaces was first published as Groundsel and Necklaces in
1946.
Flower Fairies of the Wayside was first published in 1948.
Flower Fairies of the Winter was first published in 1985, but it was a
compilation of illustrations and poems in other volumes.
Flower Fairies Birthday book only shows a publication date of 1979.
Flower Fairies Address book shows a publication date of 1980.

Also from the bibliographic information, some of the original water colors
were lost and had to be reproduced from the original editions which may
or may not account for subsequent publication dates.

The only problem is that the address book and birthday book I have (with
publications dates in the back of 1979 and 1980) are Blackie & Son's
editions. They also list three volumes I have not seen before: the Flower
Fairy Alphabet, A Little Book of Old Rhymes and the Rhyming Rainbow.
I think this is one to take to a professional book seller who is also a
experienced in such matters.

HOWEVER -

All the editions from Penguin Press in the USA and the William Clowes
Limited in the UK released in the 1980's and 1990's include a copyright
notice from the Estate of Cicely Mary Barker and a reminder of the Berne
copyright convention.

The Blackie & Son's editions do not.

I have a fondness for the older fairies myself, but I have only seen
cross stitch kits, and most of them favor the younger cuter ones. My
favorite of all of them (Willow Fairy) I have never seen offered.

Thank you for a long and detailed answer.

Yes, I should probably take the book to someone knowledgeable. (But
however I'm going to find one here in Sweden is another question :-)

My little book was probably published in the early 1950s (as indicated
by paper-quality, way of binding - with the colour pictures on their own
pages of more glossy paper with no text on the other side, appearance of
cover - not made in one piece but with the picture fastened on, and so
on. The look of the original Swedish book-sellers label is also an
indication of "at least before 1960"). On the backcover Flower Fairies
of the Wayside and Groundsel and Necklaces are listed so this would make
it at least published after 1948.

The backcover also lists as by Cicely Mary Baker A Flower Fairy Alphabet
and A Little Book of Old Rhymes that you mentioned, but ALSO A Little
Book of Rhymes New and Old, A Little Picture Hymn Book and The Lord of
the Rushie River, but NOT The Rhyming Rainbow. More and more complicated
:-)

Book publishers who don't print the dates of original publication and
current edition should definitely be done something unpleasant to! It's
far more common than one would think that either original date of
publication or date of current editon is missing. Grr!

I thought as much. Willow Fairy you said, I'll hunt that one up and have
a look.

Let's see what I have:

Flower Fairies of Autumn, Spring and Summer
Flower Fairies of the Wayside, Garden and Trees
A Flower Fairy Alphabeth
- none of these state a copyright date...

The Lord of the Rushie River (copyright 1938)
A Little Book of Old Rhymes (copyright 1936)
The Fairy's Gift (which is Groundsel & Necklaces, copyright 1946)
The Rhyming Rainbow (copyright 1977 - must be a compilation or
re-print?)

All of mine were published by Blackie in 1976/77, after CM Barker died.
I don't know the Little Book of Rhymes New and Old or A Little Picture
Hymn Book and my books do not mention them.

Karin L.

PS I also prefer the 'older looking' slim and graceful fairies to the
cute 'baby' ones - especially the Poppy and the Wild Rose, and most
of the 'tree' fairies...

I went into www.amazon.com and did a search on Cicely Mary Barker.
The results are copied below. (I'd assume that the book about
petroleum and the one called "Tapping the Vein" are by another C.
Barker :-) ).

Sorry this is so long. If you want the info and yours is cut off,
look on amazon.

If you are looking for gorgeous flower fairies in counted cross stitch,
check out the Eva Rosenstand catalog. She has about 14 of them and they
are really nice. I'm doing one now. Plenty of fabric, ample floss and an
easy to read chart. I'm not a kit fan but Eva Rosenstand has good kits.
It's linen fabric too.

Happy stitching

I cut all of the letter I'm responding to off but it consisted of a list
of Cicely Mary Barker's books as discovered on Amazon.com.

There's another source for information and ordering of Barker's books.
The Penguin UK site has the complete list of her books that are still in
print, and one can order them from there. The URL is:
http://www.futurenet.co.uk/Penguin/

I don't know what the American source would be. I found this on a web
search for fairies, as I have a fairy link site. Being a cross stitcher
certainly helps out the link page, as I have a list of a lot of online
cross stitch designers that make fairies.

Ran across four Flower Fairies (tm) in the sale bin at my local
shop. Three were Spring (Cowslip, Speedwell, Wood-Sorrel); one
was Winter (Holly). The designer is Janet Powers; the publisher
is Green Apple, Inc. (4537 Hwy.17 S. Bypass, Myrtle Beach, SC
29577 (USA). Copyright is 1996 from the estate of Cicely Mary
Barker on all four. There is a notation that the Books are/were
"published by Frederick Warne & Co." These are plain cross-stitch
charts, not the printed fabric kits from DMC. Is this a new line
that never when anywhere or are others available (apologies if I
missed this part of the thread)? Are used books stores a good
place to look for these books (or are they rare), or are they
readily available in new bookstores?
