In the wee hours before I left for the Charlotte Trade Show....I managed
to slap together a "painted" canvas of one of my Halloween designs, to
have something to work on during the trip and nights in the
hotel......as I was packing and scurrying around looking for and trying
to decide on what threads to pack....found I wasn't overly excited about
some of the threads I had...so was definitely hoping to find something
at the show that would give a more exciting stitched look to enhance
this lively design....

I wasn't disappointed....John of Rainbow Gallery came through with a
suggestion to try out a thread called "Fuzzy Stuff"...exactly what it
sounds like...a soft thread with small fuzzies of color and glitter
intermixed....immediately stitched the Witch's hair with a shade of gray
(FZ01).....super look, fuzzy gray hair with little glittery
sparkles...the absolute perfect touch!! Also considering using some of
the black Fuzzy Stuff for the black Cat's fur....now that would be a
neat effect for magical Cats...

Then found more inspiration as usual at The Thread Gatherer
booths....picked up some Halloween colors in several different threads
and ribbons....Cece suggested I do the orange flowers I had painted on
the Witch's dress in a spider web rose either in silk ribbons or a
subtly shaded orange chenille thread....sounds great to me and will look
very well with the DMC Medici wools I'm stitching with on the rest of
the dress...

The other exciting news was from Kreinik....finally will have #12
metallic braids in the glow-in-the-dark group of colors....been waiting
for the pale blue and lavendar colors...perfect for my Halloween
ideas....also planning to couch the rich looking glittery ropes (trims)
of Facets on other Halloween designs.

Then I took a look at Custom House's selection of hand dyed Silks and
Wools, Gumnut Yarns imported from AU......Judie Solomon and I had a nice
discussion on what colors to buy as I wanted ALL of them, every single
skein times two....but obviously could not afford every color but came
close anyway.....
Bought many, many shades of wool so I can indulge in creating some
surface embroidery, in this case similar to crewel work. Would like to
try out the many embroidery ideas that have been swirling in my mind for
years....buying threads is just like buying paints for me....

The other great encounters at the show was meeting a couple fellow
RCTN'ers for the very first time......I got to chat with the "legendary"
Kathy Dyer....actually she saw me first as I walked by her.......took me
a few seconds to realize who I was talking to....part of it due to being
spaced out from meds and the fact that Kathy Dyer is a legendary person
(IMO) as the keeper and creator of the fact filled FAQ pages for
RCTN....funny how even though you know there is a real person on the
other end of the computer, you somehow don't quite realize this IS the
real person standing in front of you that you've been reading about
through the years on RCTN!

Then I met Tink Bord-Dill, a needlepoint colleague.....we had a nice
dinner together with her husband Jeffrey and my Mr Wooly after the
show.....talked lots and had a very good time.....

Lula,

How does this compare to Needle Necessities' Charleston?

I think the Charlotte show is what I may miss most of not having a shop
anymore. The amount of energy I received to create and teach for a year
was absolutely worth any amount of money it would take to get me there.
Always refreshing and uplifting and you could hear that in your post.

Pat,

The Rainbow Gallery Fuzzy Stuff is a much lighter (smaller) thread, not
as bushy hairy, fuzzy or shiny as Needle Necessities Charleston....

Fuzzy Stuff is composed of 60% Polyamide, 40% Viscose - the color range
is more subdued though there are some lively shades as turquoise, lime
green and hot pink.
15 yds on the card and hand washable.
For needlepoint - use 2 ply on 14, 1 ply on 18
For XS - use 2 ply on 7 ct, 1 ply on 9-10 ct

The gray I used for the Witch's hair was perfect in creating the
illusion of textured hairs with random flashing sparkle.
