Zweigart Fabric Colors & Swatches

up a display vendor's Zweigart fabric price list. I love working on
Zweigart fabrics, but I am in a bit of a quandary. I need to order some
special fabrics, but all I have is a name and number of the color. For
example, what is the difference between Ice Blue, Wedgwood Blue, Colonial
Blue, Cadet Blue, Dark Blue, etc? Not to mention the ivories, beiges,
mushrooms, "dirty aidas," caramels, etc? When a chart recommends using
beige or light blue or whatever, how do you know which one to use? Is
there a standardized color chart from Zweigart somewhere? Is there a
correlation between these color names and DMC floss colors? That is,
what is the number of DMC floss that corresponds to Wedgwood blue or
Colonial blue, for example? Where can I get such information? I can't
wait to order the fabrics, and I certainly can't wait until September
should the vendor be at the '95 festival so I can see the fabrics for
myself and buy them at the show.
Another question: is there a place that has swatches available for
Zweigart fabrics? I would be very willing to pay for such a "color card"
like the one I use constantly for my DMC floss. I hate to purchase a
fabric of a specialty color sight unseen--and my local embroidery stores
(which are few and far between, believe me) carry little if any fabric to
begin with except white and ivory (which is too yellow for my taste), or
they have the Charles Craft stuff in the tube (which sometimes isn't big
enough for my project, or the colors are too funky).
As an aside, where in Germany are Zweigart fabrics made, and is there a
main distributor here in the US or Canada that I can write to?

Leslie, I understand that you can't wait until the festival in Sept.
But, if you can wait until the first week of March, I'm going to the
festival in NC and am taking the "Getting to Know Zweigart Fabrics
Lecture". I can ask for you and then post or email the answer (I'm
taking my laptop). Maybe that would help.

There is an article in Mary Hickmott's New Stitches No. 21 called
"Every inch of Zweigart Fabrics". If you get a chance to pick up
this British magazine, the article is very interesting. I believe
Zweigart's factory is just outside of Sindelfingen. Sorry, no
addresses listed. =(

Yet another reason to enjoy Nordic Needle! They sell swatches for US$1-2
(don't guarantee, the catalog is at home). It looks like someone pasted
long skinny strips of fabric to Contact paper, rolled it up crosswise, and
cut like making cinnamon rolls. The colors are the same order as the catalog,
swatches about 1/4 by 1 inch (enough to match floss).

The Nordic Needle catalog offers fabric samples of just about everything in
the catalog. It's a free catalog and the phone people are very helpful!
The samples are reasonably priced, but I don't know how big they are.
Mary Jane's Cross N' Stitch also has fabric samples but her catalog costs
7.50 (I think). The samples come 16 to a page and each page is an
additional $5. A little spendy. Hope this helps.

Stitcher's Source doesn't have this in their catalog, but Lesa
told me via e-mail that Wichelt has a 10 page fabric sample card
for their fabrics. Cost was $15, but please check with Lesa first.
Also, ask specifically if Zweigart fabrics are in this sample card.

Jane's Cross 'N Stitch sells them for a minimal cost. At last listing
(May 1994 - check the prices may have gone up slightly) she sells 1.5" x
1.5" swatches mounted on a sheet of paper (identical to what she sends
people who get her catalog updates) for $.30 a swatch. You can order up
to 9 different samples per sheet. Shipping costs are about $2.40 for the
samples (again check, my price list is 6 months old).

I have also given to Kathy Dyer, for inclusion in an upcoming FAQ, a table
of various fabrics and colors and the matching DMC floss colors. While
not inclusive of all of Zweigart's, and other manufacturer's, fabrics it
does give you some help identifing the fabric shade with some of the more
unusually named colors. If there is enough interest I will also post it
on the newsgroup.

Yes Please. Post the list, or at least email me a copy? this would
certainly make mail order easier. I hate guessing if the colors are
going to work, and trying to match colors in the shops can be a real hassle.

The following is a table of some of the various fabrics available from
Charles Craft, Permin and Zweigart along with the equivalent DMC color.
The names used are the ones given to the fabric by the company. If the
fabric is not listed it is because there is no equivalent DMC color
available. Please note that these may not always be an exact match (due
to dye lot variations) but at least they will give you an idea of what the
color looks like. Also note that there is no consistancy in color names
between manufacturers or even between different types of fabrics made by
the same manufacturer. For example, Ice Blue Damask Aida is not the same
color as Ice Blue Jubilee even though they are both made by Zweigart and
what Permin called Slate in Aida they call Twilight Blue in Linen.

& samples!!

Thanks for this; you are a stitcher after my own heart; my computer xstitch
program lets me select background colour and I have been attempting to do
this matching DMC floss fabric colour. if you have no objection may I
forward the info to the firm who do the program for possible incorporation
into it, please??
