If there are any cross stitchers reading from either Holland or Belgium,
could you recommend any shops? Are there local designers or patterns or
magazines I should look for? I will be visiting there in April. So far we
will stay in Amsterdam and Bruges.

Rachel,
Shops I'm not so sure about, but visit the Rijksmuseum as it has samplers,
so I believe.

I have a book, written about 20 years ago by the curator of textiles at
Arnhem's Open Air Museum of Dutch sampler patterns. So I went and looked at
their site (which is in Dutch, of course, except for the home page if you click
the little English flag). Apparently they have been displaying the longest
sampler in the world this winter (125 m).

The Dutch did a lot of cross stitch traditionally. My sampler book has several
color plates of some lovely examples from the 18th and 19th century. Many of
them were held in Arnhem, but there appear to be several small collections
throughout the country

So even the small museums (and the museum shops, of course) might be worth
checking out if you can get out of Amsterdam for a day.

Now I had better get some work done.

Brugge is a WONDERFUL city with all the bobin lace. You can watch the ladies
make it at several loctions. There are many stores that sell it from the very
inexpensive to the opposite. You can also buy materials to make bobin lace if
you wish.

I've had great success doing mail order with a shop in the Netherlands -Paul
Schouten
Grote Noord 120
1621 KM Hoorn
The Netherlands
+31 229 215682

They have supplied me with several of Maria van Scharrenberg's designs which
I had been unable to get in the UK. I believe that this is out side
Amsterdam, but if you manage to get there, please tell Wilbert that Megwen
recommended the shop.
