Thanks! Patti
Hi Patti,
I use scroll frames because I can make them myself and just resize them
for different projects. New dowel rods are only fifty cents each and the
wood for the cross peaces is inexpensive also.
Q-Snaps look good but not nearly as versatile. Also more expensive.
I assume there are lap and floor stands for them. Again I built my own.
As a side note Q-Snaps are made from PVC plastic. Do you really want an
archeologist to dig up your house in 20,000 years and write an article
on how you worshiped the divine square. ;-)
My (not so) humble opinion
Lewis
Scroll frames all the way! I used a Q-Snap once, one of the edges
totally ripped through my fabric, and I'll never use another.

I have both, and I use both for different projects. I use my scrolls most of
the time. I don't make homemade ones. I use Tomorrow's Treasures, and I like
them the best. Most of the projects I do are large, and I like having a large
area to work in. (I know people's idea of "large" is relative. Right now, I
have Chance Encounter from de la Tour designs mounted on 3/4"x30" rods on a lap
frame that spans my coffee table. I consider this my "large" project.)
I use the Q-Snaps for small things like the Listen Honey stuff from Twisted
Threads. If the design area fits within the 8" square of the Q-Snaps, I
consider it a small, quickie project; and I don't bother mounting it on scroll
rods. I have heard stories about the Q-Snaps tearing fabric, but I have not
yet had it happen to me.
This is a way big to-each-his-own area. Most all the stitchers I know have
both and use both for different things.

Current Projects: Chance Encounter (de la Tour), Button Vendor (LA), and the
Unicorn (TW)
Working on whatever I feel like at the moment....
Currently Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, Ernie with
Rubber Ducky in the Tub, and Cookie Monster.
Also some class stuff and a wedding sampler.
New goal: Enjoy it and not worry about what get done
when.

-I have a scroll frame and floor stand which I've used for at least twenty
years. This week, I bought the Tomorrow's Treasures starter set. I
assembled one frame and was hooked. It doesn't twist. I immediately
called Nordic Needle and ordered a 15" extender bar and two sets of knobs
to make a total of three frames. I'm getting rid of everything else--the
yard sale purchases, the discount store frames. There is nothing like
having good equipment. Now I need to ask--what floor stand should I use?

Patti,
I _love_ scroll frames. I use LokScroll and have a "generic" one with
wing nuts that I have a large project on, right now. But, I'm a
LokScroll kinda guy! Q-Snaps...actually I saw my first one, in use,
last night. I wasn't impressed (_my_ observation, ladies and
gentlemen...just mine). The fabric (Aida) was fairly loose in the
frame. The user was, however, quite pleased, so, to each his/her own.
The fabric on the Q was crooked, too, which can happen on any device.

My preference depends on the project, the fabric, and personal preferences. For
example, on afghans, I prefer to work in hand unless the stitching is over one,
in which case I prefer Qsnaps.
I think as you gain experience with each method, you will find you also have
some preferences as to when you prefer to use a particular method...

Hi Patti,
I have both (plus hoops of various designs) and I have to say I'm
sold on the Q-snaps. The scroll frame gets heavy after a while, and
I don't have the $$ to go buy a lap frame. The Q-snaps were only
$10 or so, they're lightweight, and I like being able to adjust
the tension with a little turn of the gripper-sleeve-thingies (hoo,
how's that for technobabble?). I'm sure you'll get tons of different
opinions about this as everyone has her/his preference. Now you
know mine. :-)
Happy stitching!
