I want to get either a scroll frame or Q-Snap. Has anyone used either of
these? I'd appreciate anyone's comments on their preference.

Thanks! Patti

Hi Patti,

I use scroll frames because I can make them myself and just resize them
for different projects. New dowel rods are only fifty cents each and the
wood for the cross peaces is inexpensive also.

Q-Snaps look good but not nearly as versatile. Also more expensive.

I assume there are lap and floor stands for them. Again I built my own.

As a side note Q-Snaps are made from PVC plastic. Do you really want an
archeologist to dig up your house in 20,000 years and write an article
on how you worshiped the divine square. ;-)

My (not so) humble opinion

Scroll frames all the way! I used a Q-Snap once, one of the edges
totally ripped through my fabric, and I'll never use another.

I have both, and I use both for different projects. I use my scrolls most of
the time. I don't make homemade ones. I use Tomorrow's Treasures, and I like
them the best. Most of the projects I do are large, and I like having a large
area to work in. (I know people's idea of "large" is relative. Right now, I
have Chance Encounter from de la Tour designs mounted on 3/4"x30" rods on a lap
frame that spans my coffee table. I consider this my "large" project.)

I use the Q-Snaps for small things like the Listen Honey stuff from Twisted
Threads. If the design area fits within the 8" square of the Q-Snaps, I
consider it a small, quickie project; and I don't bother mounting it on scroll
rods. I have heard stories about the Q-Snaps tearing fabric, but I have not
yet had it happen to me.

This is a way big to-each-his-own area. Most all the stitchers I know have
both and use both for different things.

I like them both, depending on what I am doing and how big the piece
is. I only work on Q-snaps if the piece will fit on the frame and not
have to be moved. Otherwise, I use scroll rods. Both fit in my lap
stand (I have an elan) and since I don't do much above about 20" in
length, the stand tipping (the floor stand doesn't have the
problem--that one is called a Gazelle) isn't an issue. I think the
elan can hold up to 24" without tipping.

Working on whatever I feel like at the moment....

Currently Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, Ernie with
Rubber Ducky in the Tub, and Cookie Monster.
Also some class stuff and a wedding sampler.

New goal: Enjoy it and not worry about what get done
when.

I much prefer Q-snaps! They are easier to use and lighter to hold. They also
clamp onto various floor frames and table frames (which I use). I've never had
my fabric torn. Be careful tho, there are imitation cheapy brands out there.
Also, for scroll frames, you have to use them the width of the fabric. If
you're using a large piece of fabric, this could be cumbersome. The q-snaps can
be used just like hoops, put 'em where you need 'em.
Do you have any friends that could let you try out their scrolls/Q-snaps
first? Obviously, some people prefer scrolls while others (like me) prefer
Q-snaps.

Hi Patti-I have both and I must say, I love both....the Q snaps are quicker
to put on and take off but do have a tendency to loosen up after
awhile....not too badly thought...The scroll frame stays nice and tight but
it takes time to pin the fabric to the canvas (yes, I pin it, not sew it and
it works fine). So, both are really good and it depends on your project and
your personal taste. I have Summerland, my big project on QSnaps so that I
can take it off when I know that I won't be working on it for awhile...you
really don't have to but I do. The scroll frames when they are really big
can be cumbersome. Hope this is helpful-Marie

Or you can take a look at our webpage and have the best of both
worlds...........Kevins frames have a clamp that attaches the fabric to the
scroll rod. These are wounderful.......just follow the link below......

-I have a scroll frame and floor stand which I've used for at least twenty
years. This week, I bought the Tomorrow's Treasures starter set. I
assembled one frame and was hooked. It doesn't twist. I immediately
called Nordic Needle and ordered a 15" extender bar and two sets of knobs
to make a total of three frames. I'm getting rid of everything else--the
yard sale purchases, the discount store frames. There is nothing like
having good equipment. Now I need to ask--what floor stand should I use?

Patti,

I _love_ scroll frames. I use LokScroll and have a "generic" one with
wing nuts that I have a large project on, right now. But, I'm a
LokScroll kinda guy! Q-Snaps...actually I saw my first one, in use,
last night. I wasn't impressed (_my_ observation, ladies and
gentlemen...just mine). The fabric (Aida) was fairly loose in the
frame. The user was, however, quite pleased, so, to each his/her own.
The fabric on the Q was crooked, too, which can happen on any device.

John
I'm so suprised. I use q-snaps all the time and really enjoy them. I hardly
ever use my scroll frame except for needlepoint. The q-snaps don't work as
well for canvas.

I really like my Q-snap. It has a very nice even tension. With Q-snaps you
get your even tension on all 4 sides, not just top and bottom. I'm working
on Earthdancer with Prarie Grain Linen, and have yet to had any problem. I
use fabric before I attach the clamps. I would recommend Q-snaps
whole-heartedly, just remember to use the fabric before using the clamps.

I have the Gazelle, Elan and the entire scroll frame set of Lok Scrolls from
Artisan Design. I totally love them. I do work in hand and on frame. I
much prefer on frame vs. in hand.

I stitch everyway possible, smile. I have projects going in hand, on Qsnaps,
and on scroll frame and Gazelle stand.

My preference depends on the project, the fabric, and personal preferences. For
example, on afghans, I prefer to work in hand unless the stitching is over one,
in which case I prefer Qsnaps.

I think as you gain experience with each method, you will find you also have
some preferences as to when you prefer to use a particular method...

I use the Q snaps for small projects and the scroll frames with my floor
frame for larger than 15x18 projects.

Hi Patti,
I have both (plus hoops of various designs) and I have to say I'm
sold on the Q-snaps. The scroll frame gets heavy after a while, and
I don't have the $$ to go buy a lap frame. The Q-snaps were only
$10 or so, they're lightweight, and I like being able to adjust
the tension with a little turn of the gripper-sleeve-thingies (hoo,
how's that for technobabble?). I'm sure you'll get tons of different
opinions about this as everyone has her/his preference. Now you
know mine. :-)

Happy stitching!
Alicia

I personaly put my vote in for Qsnaps. The generic ones, like you see in
Joannes concern me. I think they might rip fabric. My Qsnaps are a single
piece of plastic, with clamps. I hate to use any thing that requires extra
work so I have not been impressed with scroll frames (stitching them on to the
frame eeeeee). Snap frames come in many sizes, 8by8, 11by11, 18by18 and a
huge floor frame for quilting ( I have them all). I like them because they are
light weight and I take my projects to college to work on befor class. I also
like the old metal embroidry hoops with the spring for some projects. For
quilting I will not use Qsnaps only the big quilt hoops . Bu like we have all
said it's a matter of personal opion.

I've used both. I like the Qsnaps for smaller, say under 10 inch projects
because they are tighter. However I prefer the scroll rods for larger ones
as they are easier to handle. I've never had trouble with marks on my cloth
from the Q's. I do find the scroll rods not as tight as I'd like tho. I'll
never give up my Q's!!!
