Anyway, can anyone out there give me the name of any blue birds in
England? Never occured to me before that the "bluebird" here was only
an American bird... and I'm looking for a bird to embroider onto an
accessory for a Renaissance Festival... so I guess I ought to pick a
bird that's native to England, though I'd like to stick to the main
color being a shade or three of blue.
I can't seem to find any sites to look such a thing up on the web...
Thanks!

There is the blue tit - no I am not kidding!
Cheryl
The jay has vivid blue flashes on it's wings...
If you want to know what a blue tit looks like, my picturetrail site has
a couple of small cross stitched examples. It's still under construction,
so there is no text, although the pictures are labelled.
www.picturetrail.com, user name is annasneedlework - the relevant albums
are Christmas smalls and Miscellaneous Smalls.
The site seems really slow tonight, though...

can find in our travels is an honest friend.

The site`s been slow all day - took me ages to upload one picture.
Don`t forget pigeons - many have lovely shades of blue and mauve.

Several people have already mentioned blue tits.
Lots of Marjolein Bastin's designs feature them:
Birdhouse Artistry;
Four Seasons;
or the little kit I have called "Garden Dweller"
You can see some of them here:

Reminds me of the joke during the war.
"10 WRNS" (Wrens) "went swimming on a cold day - what came out?"
"20 blue tits".
I love these cute little birds, but wish they were better known by their
original name of "titmice".

I have to admit the first time I heard 'blue tits' it was the sound of David
Attenborough plummy voice, just sent me over the edge.
Titmice also has it's problems..... Where do they live? In old bras?

Maybe old cups? I often lie in bed watching them (the birds) on the peanut
holder just outside the window - occasionally I yell out to DH "There`s a
Great Tit looking in the window!" Always guaranteed to bring him running
saying "Cor! Where!!!" The mind boggles!

Can't be any worse than the tour guides at the Grand Tetons National Park
pointing out the English meaning of the French name......

*G* I can "go one better"... A trip I took with a vocal group in the 80s
included our "tour guide" who, like our bus driver, was from Yugoslavia
(yeah, it's been a while). She told us many stories that included tales
of the "Ta-Tas" sweeping into the valley and invading... and then
rushing back... etc. (Yes, Tartars for those who couldn't figure it out)
And yes, it seemed like everywhere we travelled in Yugoslavia, Hungary
and Austria there was another story about the "Ta-tas" and the Huns.
We also got to tease her a lot that there were a Pizza Inn and a Pizza
Out chain here in the US.... Apparently you need to be quite careful how
you pronounce the word Pizza... because it can mean something quite
different (in Italian maybe??) if you draw out the 'i' sound....

Now I just have to find a couple *good* pictures of a male, so I can
figure out the colors a bit better...
Thanks for the pointers to charts, but this is one I'm going to have to
do in long and short, split, chain, or something along those lines. So
I'm going to have to do the drawing then stitching in thing.
Anyone seen any decent sized photos out there on the web I could use?
I'm going to check the library tomorrow.
-Liz
Now all I need to do is figure out what colors I'm using... and DMC or
Needlepoint Silks...
-Liz
Liz - How big do you want this to be? I think somewhere I have a design
in embroidery for a blue tit, with a sprig of blossom that came from
Needlecraft magazine...
Though if the pattern offered is a drawn outline, *please* let me know
what issue, so I can get a copy. After all, if I have (and own) the
pattern, I can always adjust it to size.
Thanks for the offer, though!
