Ok you wonderful ladies, I need your wonderful advice. As many of you know, I
am the class coordinator at my local Michaels. Well, our class program is
suffering, greatly... my drawing, oil painting, and knitting/crochet teacher
just all up and quit on me right before Christmas. Now, the only classes we
have are Wilton Cake Decorating, Cartooning, Floral Design, and Crop Parties.
Wilton is the only class that has attendance though. The other three haven't
had a student in months. I think I might have a drawing and oil painting
instructor lined up though. Here is where I need your advice, since most of you
are avid Michaels shoppers... what kind of classes do your Micahels offer, and
what kind of classes would you all like to take or see brought to the store? I
do realize that the interest for classes will vary depending on the location of
the store... Also, how would you like to see Michaels advertise these classes?
Because demos, in store-displays, and flyers just aren't cutting it... I even
advertise in our paper, and on the local tv show that I do... hasn't helped at
al really. I don't know what to do... Wilton is booming like crazy... it needs
no help whatsoever... but, other than that, I'm stuck. I need to think of
something because our store is getting lower on the list of stores in our area
in classes. Any advice that you all could give me would be MOST GREATLY
appreciated. You can post or e-mail me. Thanks so much girls... : )

Harley,

How about scrapbooking technique classes, like chalking or creative
lettering. If we had a closer store those are two classes I would take.

Well, if the crop parties aren't doing well, I won't if you have a strong
base of scrapbookers....What about a 15 minute pages or less...that might
appeal to people who are behind. You could cover color blocking, etc.

I would personally also like a class on rubber stamping, or create a card -
you could theme it with appropriate holidays that are close by.

On the other hand, if it is you wilton class that is doing best, maybe
people just like to cook...how about candy making?

Good luck!!

Is the Wilton class doing better because they have a well-known
sponsor?? Maybe you could appeal to some scrapping company reps to
sponsor a class using their products??

What kinds of classes do the lss's around you teach? I'd either
offer something different than them, or the same thing at a lower
price.

Can you do newsletters to your scrappers?? If you put out a box
asking for addresses (or on the cheaper side, email addresses), you
could send out a newsletter advertising the classes that you do
decide to offer.

Hope this helps!

I personally would love a class on how to "Scrap in a Flash". You
know, techniques and tips on how to crack out beautiful pages without
speding forever getting them ready or spending a small fortune.

Sorry I'm not more help!

Thanks ladies... I only have one LSS, and she doesn't offer any classes, only
crops... but she's closing anyway! And we do a candy making class through
Wilton every month, and everyone is always like "ooh, I want to take that...."
but we call them, and let them know about it, and no one ever comes... And this
is us calling 20 people or more... everyone is interested, but no one ever
comes... Any other suggestions as far as different classes, such as watercolors
or woodworking or anything? I like the idea of the newsletter... I will have to
talk to the boss about that one : ) Thanks again!

Harley, have you tried doing mother-daughter classes? Maybe on a Saturday
morning... stuff that can be simple for the kids but the moms could get into
it more. Like card-making before Valentine's Day or Father's Day. Or
painting those wooden ornament things before Christmas or Easter... I think
people would be less likely to bail if thier kid was going too. (It's that
guilt factor! LOL!)

really know anything about it either... someone fill me in on that if you can :

Our Michael's is the pits! Dirty and cluttered! It definitely would not
entice me to take a class there. If I remember correctly, you are in a new
store though...right?

Maybe price is the deterant. Maybe you could get the Mgr. to advertise a
"free" scrapbooking class. Do something to just whet their appetite and maybe
they will come back for more of the same.

All I know is that the mom and kid both do the craft, usually with mom
helping kid out when needed. You could make the craft a little more
advanced for the mom if you wanted. Our Michaels has a Kids Club and every
Saturday has a craft class for kids that costs $2.00. You can sign up and
pay in advance or on the day if there's room. They are very popular here.

Yeh... we're a year old in March... I'm working hard to make sure no one puts
"junk" in my classroom. It's a classroom, not a storage room darnit! : ) I'll
run the free class by my manager... I think I can do it if I have the class on
a day that I'm already working... hmm... ideas, ideas... Thanks! : )

I went to our Michael's today and it looks like they were starting to clean up
a little....VERY little. BUT...there was a lady set up at a table in the back
of the store by the scrapbook supplies working on some layout ideas. She had
an album with her for various layout ideas that we could look at. They were
really simple but she was there to promote a class that she will be teaching.
They had placed copies of the class calendar on the table so that we could take
one if we wanted to. Not sure how well this worked for getting people signed
up but it did intrigue many people to look through her book.

Yeh, since we're a new store, and our classroom is at the front, we get this
wonderful thing called a demo table : ) I LOVE mine.. it's set up right beside
the front door, and I have display cakes for Wilton, our class calendar, and
all sorts of handouts on it. I am in the process of making our store scrapbook
to go on the table as well. Maybe that will get people interested...especially
if they see a technique in the book that they want to learn. How fortunate I am
to get paid to scrapbook : ) Thanks again : )

That would make a difference for me, as a consumer, to see a class in action.
My local Michael's has a classroom, waaaaay in the back corner, hidden away
from the public. The classes are poorly advertised (a boring flyer
occasionally given out by the cashiers).

Have you thought about offering inexpensive classes to Scout/4H/Camp Fire, etc.
groups? Althought the attendees are kids, their parents do attend with them
and you might find some parents who will want to take further classes.

Harley,

How about offering a Mom's Night Out Crop to local MOMS Clubs (Moms Offering
Moms Support), Mothers of Multiples or MOPS (Mothers Of Preschoolers)? You
could call some of the local churches to get more info or look on their
national websites for local chapters.

I think the Girl Scout/4H idea is great too. Think of as many groups as
your can. And personally, I would charge a nominal fee ($5 or so) to put a
value on your class. You will obviously benefit from material sales, but
that way you sound confident in your program as well.

Harley, you already got lots of advice but maybe some of this will help too. I
used to work at Michael's and still keep in touch with people there. I called
the class coordinator. They said they had this problem at various different
times... they would survey random custormers a different times of the day with
like 3 questions... alot like the ones you asked us. Then worked on class ideas
from there. They offered in scrapbooking the discount paper that ends up like
10 cents... we would pull it to the class room and let people who took the
class have first dibs. For other classes, we did wedding favors and
invitations, all the season classes they send we would usually change the idea
alittle. Of course she said birthday parties where a good place to recruit for
classes since most kids who Mom thinks of a Michaels' craft party for the kids
is some what crafty. Hope it helps. Let us know how it's going.

Hey Harley...I would love to take more classes but our LSS classes are quite
expensive...and poorly advertised to...as for our Michaels...you got the low
down from Susan West...it is dirty, old and the classroom is in the back. I
think you have great potential with yours in the front...My suggestion for
classes is

Vellum
Creative Lettering
Chalking
Paper Tearing
Color blocking
paper piecing

And a small fee of under $5.00 and mention what that fee includes. Maybe
Michaels will agree to discount the featured item for 30 minutes after the
class or in the class or something...like 10% off chalks that night for a
chalking class (or any accessories--eraser, swabs, etc.)

Maybe sponsor a Make n Take on a Saturday for $1.00 and it is a few
hours...so people can come in at all different times. I have been to a few
of those and they teach you how to do a paper piecing from a kit...or you
can just take it with you to do at home...it is cool cuz you can watch the
girl embellishing it onsite...

Hope it works out for you and maybe you can write the Brandon, FL store and
tell them what worked for you....so we can have good stuff too! lol

Good luck

Just wanted to add that I am gleaning ideas from this as well! I'm not the
class coordinator at our Michaels, but I do teach there! (When I'm not running
a register that is) But I'm looking for some other classes to do besides just
scrapbooking...we have wilton twice a week and then the scrapbooking class once
a month (so far) and there is a painting class once as well, and of course kids
club...I was thinking of doing cardmaking or something, anything that's similar
to scrapbooking in that I can use most of the stuff I already have, but
something that's not just making pages...some people just don't want to do
something so involved, although I see that as the best part! Anyways, I have
to get on to work now, I'll catch back up with the group soon!

How do you like working at Michael's? Do you get a discount? LOL I am
thinking of geting a p/t job there for fun and putting the baby in
daycare 3 days a week to get used to other kids. He is almost 2 and
getting to be such a brat! hates to share. He reallyu needs to be around
kids and I need to be around adults. I think that would be such a neat
job!

Maybe a "goodie" bag. Not so much as lots of free stuff but a coupon for
people who attended the class, like to 40% off or something but only for
them, maybe a gel pen and some paper?! Not sure though, would you have
to pay for that does management even let you give things away like
that?

Yes! We get discounts!! (hope you don't mind my butting in) Mine's 25%, I
think Harley's might be 30 but she can tell you for sure...it just depends!

Yes, Jalei is right, it's a wonderful job. Every crafter/scrapper's dream, and
maybe nightmare if you're like me and just hand the paycheck right back when
you get it : ) All discount's are the same, 25%. But, you are the first to know
when there is a coupon coming out in the paper. You also learn little tricks,
like, sales OFFICIALLY start on Sundays, but most stores set their upcoming ad
on Saturday night, and will honor the prices then : ) You'll love it : )

The paycheck DOES become a nightmare when the store gets it all back!! I told
them to start paying me in giftcards, it would be easier! My dad told me just
to make sure I bring him the car payment when i put my check into the bank, cuz
he knows by the time i go to work the next day (2 hours early to shop) it would
be gone!! But it is a great place, and I can speak for our store when I say
that all of the employees we have now (after weeding out the ones that were
just store-opening help) are really great and fun people....artsy people work
at michaels stores, that is what makes it so fun, and you can learn ideas from
everybody, including customers!! And about the coupons-we'll get the box of
spare fliers a few days ahead of time and the employees will pick out a few
each (i usually grab a handful myself) but the manager has someone in our store
come in early on sundays to set the signs just so he doesnt have to honor them
on saturday nights lol...(he's a great boss, but our store isn't doing too well
and so he's not being too lenient on things lately)...anyways, the bottom line
is, I definitely recommend this as a part-time job b/c its very laidback from
my POV and its not all that stressful, and you'll get great crafting advice!
I feel like I just wrote a paper-I'm through!!!
