Well, thanks to everyone that responded to my "book or class" question
I've decided to take a beginning quilter's class. I went to sign up today
and it turns out that they are having a two for one sale on classes this
summer---lucky me! The only problem is that the supplies are soooooo
expensive.
I've kindof decided that I want to take the watercolor quilt class for my
second one. Watercolor quilts seem to be the rage right now since I've seen
you guys talking about them alot. I'm still not completely sure what they
are since they didn't have one on display. I just looked through a book.
The expensive part is buying the book--Watercolor Quilts
(published by That Patchwork Place) which is $32.95 Cdn.--about $23.50US
and the "Design Wall". I've read that you can use fleece or flannel for a
design wall but they want you to buy a product called "Design Wall". This
fabric is sold by the meter and has 2 inch squares sewn into it. It costs
$36.95 Cdn. a meter and we need 1.5 meters. That is about $25.00US/yard.
Have any of you used this product and is it worth it? What about just using
fleece? Does any one know where to get this and/or the book cheaper?
(US sources are fine and most likely a better price.) This will determine if
I can take the second class or not.
Thanks in advance for any information I can get!

Jeanette, I use a piece of Pellon fleece for my design wall. It's been up for
a year and it works just fine, and it's a lot cheaper than $25US/yard. I
doubt it cost me more than $3to$4 a yard. This "Design Wall" product has a
nice grid on it, but if your squares for your quilt are true squares, you can
live without the grid. If you must have the grid, try calling In The
Beginning in Seattle WA (206-523-8862); I think they have it and they do mail
order, and I don't think it's as expensive as the price you quote above.

The book "Watercolor Quilts" is available from a Portland, Oregon USA company
called Connecting Threads. The price from Connecting Threads is $19.96US.
The stock number is 40177. Phone numbers:

800-574-6454 24 hours for ordering
503-287-6916 for FAX order

The catalog, which I just happened to have in the office today says they
accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and checks in US dollars.

Bye!
