Hi! Does anyone know what's the difference between pearlex powders,
mica inclusions(?), and fimo's pulver metallic powders? Are they all
the same? Are they really that expensive? Where can I find the
cheapest? Thanks! Tanya

Tanya:

The Fimo pulvers are actual metal -- aluminum, I think, but I could be
wrong about that. For that reason, you need to be particularly careful
when you use them -- you don't want to be breathing that stuff.
Some people recommend wearing a dust mask when using the
pulvers. Pearl-Ex powders are not metal, although they give a
metallic-looking effect. Pearl-Ex is powdered mica, which I understand
is safer to use than the actual metal powders. I haven't tried the mica
inclusions.

Both the Fimo pulvers and the Pearl-Ex powders go a long way. The
little jars of Pearl-Ex should last you quite a while -- although that
doesn't solve the expense problem, because of course you want all of the
colors (don't we all?). Maybe you can find another polymer clay junkie
near where you live and split the cost.

In addition to the Fimo pulvers, there are other powdered metals
available - can't recall any brand names, but I've seen them in art
supply stores. Some folks in my clay guild have been using something
called "powdered pearls," which seems similar to Pearl-Ex, but I don't
know where they got it or what it costs.

Do remember that cheaper is not always better.

And, for the amount of powder you get, the price is really pretty good.

Thanks Thalassa! You've been very helpful. I just bought that Atlas
pasta machine from jackbergsales and soon it'll be here. I'm so
excited already! It seems like I want to buy every stuff that deals
with polymer clays! Now, i'm interested with these metallic
powders...well, i gotta slow down. I saw these pearlex powders at
clayfactory(?)...i don't know but I just gotta have them! I was hoping

there's a store out there who sells these same powders for a cheaper
price! Thanks again! Tanya

The Powdered Pearls are high quality (costmetic grade) pearlescent mica
pigments. According to the literature, they contain no metals, leads,
additives, fillers, foreign matter, extenders, or low-grade pigments.

They can be brushed on or stamped into unbaked clay. They can be applied
after baking by incorporating them into whatever finish you use: Future,
Fimo Glaze, Flecto, Golden, etc.

I have used them and found them to be terrific! They come in colors that
PearlEx doesn't, and they have some called "Midnight Pearls," designed to be
used with dark clay, which are incredibly beautiful.

They can be purchased individually or in sets. I think the prices are very
reasonable. I am not affiliated with this company. I am recommending this
product because I have used it and have gotten excellent results. I also
like the fact that their containers are not as large as the PearlEx jars, so
they take up much less room in my already overcrowded studio.

They can be obtained from

I know what you mean. I'm really impressed by the color selection
and am saving my profits as we speak to buy the "whole Enchilada"
I have most of the PearlEx powders already and if you want to try
one, I would recommend pearl. It gives a sheen to every color
without losing the color when rubbed on. It also simulates silver
when rubbed on black. Silver itself actually comes out looking
like hematite, which isn't necessarily bad, but it's not silver.

I love these powders. I started my clay experience caning and
have only recently moved to non-caned work and the powders are
exellent for enhancing my work.

Tanya,

I sell both Powdered Pearls and Pearl Ex powders at WDP Studio. I believe
that I offer these mica powders at a price that is the most affordable for
pc artists. You may like to check out my site at www.wdpstudio.com -- just
click on the button marked Eclectic Artist Supplies.

And, I apologize to any one who believes that I am self-promoting. I am
and I also am trying to offer quality supplies at affordable prices. I hope
you understand that I am not trying grandstand, just answering the asked
question.

Thank you
Dianne

How does one do that - move away from canework? I've tried a few times over
the years but the force has always been too strong for me. It pulls me back
everytime...

I take it back...maybe moved away is too strong. How about
expanded my artistic horizons to include other things besides
caning. Caning is too fun to ever give up, but the new things I'm
learning are fun also.
