Please offer advice on painting on tin. I have a 12" diametre tin,
previously purchased containing Christmas Cookies, etc. It is hi-gloss
red with miscellaneous Christmas scenery, etc. I would like to re-paint
this tin.

I have completed a smaller project. I scuffed the surface with steel
wool, wiped with white vinegar, basecoated in acrylic, tole painting in
acrylic, spray varnished..... and three months later, rust started to
seep through the seam and edges of the tin.

My next project is for someone's home and I do not want to ship a
project that will rust. I plan on basecoating with acrylic laytex
interior paint and tole painting with Ceramcoat acrylics. Please offer
advice on preparatory work for the tin, and sealing (varnish, urethane,
etc.)

Thank you for your time, Laura

I wonder if you used spray-on Rust-oleum or a primer spray-paint
specifically for metal (such as auto-body primer). I don't have any
experience with it, but it makes sense to me that it would work that way.

Laura, using the steel wool and wiping with white vinegar is your first
steps. Then you need to air dry completely and then spray seal with
Krylon 1311 Matte. I would give it several light coats to ensure
complete coverage. Let dry, it doesn't take too long, then paint with
whatever basecoat paint you want. I'm thinking that the water base
acrylic paint seeped into the tin if it wasn't sealed with your 1311
sealer first. This possiblly caused the rusting. Seal after you finish
tole painting with whatever varnish you like. I happen to like J.W.Right
Step varnish.
