Can anyone offer correct advice for the steps involved in
painting/designing terra cotta clay pots to be used in planting?
Are there any strict no-no's?
Thanks;

Just be sure to paint the INSIDE of the pot too.
Otherwise you'll have blistering/peeling because
the terra cotta is not entirely water tight.

Hi Denise,

I begin by spray painting the entire outside of the pot a single color. I
just buy canned spray enamel at the hardware store. It acts as an inner
sealer for the paint but still allows the pot to breathe. Then I use
acrylic artist paints to paint my design, in my case flowers, and finally I
use a clear acrylic spray, again just a can from the hardware store, as an
outer sealer. My pots have been outside now for between 3 and 5 years and
they still look like new. I also have fun painting garden statues in the
same way.

You can see my clay pots on display on my website at
http://home.earthlink.net/~ronzcrafts/. The pots are just below the iris
folding. The garden statues are further down the page.

I hope this helps...
...Ron

Wow! I enjoyed looking at your creations. It may have inspired me enough to
pull out my 10-yr-old set of acrylic paints (most of which still haven't dried
up!) and start painting again! :-) Thank you!
