I have an old saw I want to paint a scene on and am wondering if it will
work o.k. with the oil paints I usually use. (Bob Ross, etc.) Is there any
special primer or special paint I should be using?

I have painted on old saws before, it's been a few years. You can use your
regular oil paints. You will have to use a primer on the saw first. If I can
remember correctly, I sprayed a rust primer on first and then a flat black
spray paint. Then I painted the blade and sprayed it with a finish just as I
would on canvas.

If you can, you will want to degrease and very lightly sand
the saw so that your paint can get a good grip on it.
400 grit sandpaper would probably work pretty well.

When prepping any metal surface other than sandblasting it, sand lightly to
take off rust, wash with vinegar and water and REALLY let dry ... even bake it
if you have to to dry it. Prime it by spraying with car primer and then paint
and varnish as you usually would. Just remember oil paints .. oil varnish
...NEVER put any water based product over oil as it will eventually peel off.
