I was asked to paint some flowerpots to be auctioned as a fundraiser for
our neighborhood Town Hall. I just finished one that I think would be a
great idea as a kid craft and I thought some of the friendly crafters in
this group might like it.

Materials:

1. Terra-cotta pot and saucer (clean)
2. sealer- I used Delta Ceramcoat all purpose sealer. Gesso would do,
too.
3. acrylic craft paint in whatever color you like
4. Watercolor Crayons- I used Karat Aquarell watercolor crayons by
Staedtler
5. Spray varnish in a matte or satin gloss. Non-waterbased.
6. Varnish- I used Satin Varnish Indoor/Outdoor by Delta Ceramcoat.

(an older child could do this part, too)
Make sure the pot is clean. Scrub it with a steel wool pad if you need
to. Let it dry.
Seal the pot/saucer outsides. Don't seal the insides. Let dry.
Paint the outside of the pot/saucer with whatever color you like of
acrylic craft paint. You may need up to 3 or 4 coats. Let dry.

Ok, here's the fun part:

Have your child draw whatever he/she decides on the painted pot with the
watercolor crayons. Make sure the crayons don't get wet.
Take the pot outside and spray the outside thoroughly with the spray
varnish. Spray it with at least two coats. Three would be better.

Make sure that once the watercolor crayon drawing is on the pot, that it
doesn't come in contact with water. Water will make the crayons run.
Once the spray varnish has dried, the drawing is protected.

If you used a matte varnish, once it has dried you can varnish once more
with a water based satin or gloss varnish. Satin/gloss varnishes bring
out the detail and color of the drawing.

You can now put a plant in it or whatever you want to do with it. I
thought these would make great gifts from children to parents,
grandparents, etc. It would also make a good group craft project, for
Scouts, etc.
