Ive been running into some space limitations so need shorter tooling.
Ive got plenty of GOOD drill chucks and a few GOOD R8 drill chucks to

For the smaller sizes, at least, I've found the plain end mill
holders are shorter. Even for 5/8", I think that a 5/8" end mill holder
in either 30 Taper or 40 Taper would be shorter than a chuck on an
adaptor.
And the smaller DA collet chucks also would be shorter than an
arbor plus a Jacobs chuck, though the larger collet chucks would be
longer, of course.
Also -- do you have a 30-40 taper adaptor? I have one which
will allow the 30 taper tooling for the Bridgeport to work with my 40
taper Nichols horizontal -- I just needed to make a new drawbar for
those, since they expected a different drawbar thread.

You could also try a Jacobs to straight shank in a 40 taper end
mill holder.
Good Luck,
