I used the following website to check the download/upload speed of my
computer:

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/

My download speed was 1534 kbps - right where it should be.
But my upload speed was only 266 kbps.
I ran the test on two different days with nearly the same results.
Anyone know why there would be a discrepancy?????

What does your provider say your upload speed *should* be?

Neat site. My ratio was about 10 : 1. It does not bother me much as
I seldom upload a lot.

Thanks for the reference...
If I understand it correctly, there is a difference between download and
upload and it's normal...

Don't know. I do remember that when I got my cable internet,
the up and down speeds were remarkably different.

It depends on what your ISP claimed to be supplying you. I have a feeling they offer more
down than up because they cache.

Yup. "Consumer" Digital Subscriber Line connections have asymmetric
performance for the reasons outlined in the article. ADSL.

Even FIOS performance is asymmetric, though at nearly 10 X the
claimed performance of ADSL.

Unless you have a commercial dedicated connection your downstream speed
will be significantly higher than your upstream speed. "DSL" is more
properly known as "ADSL" with the "A" being "asymetric" and referring to
the difference in upstream and downstream speeds.

That's the "asymmetrical" in ADSL.

Because your average internet user wants to download lots of porn, but
rarely uploads it.

Because the ISPs quote the download speeds, and typically have much
lower upload speeds. Those numbers sound like you've got ADSL? The "A"
stands for Asymmetric, as in download faster than upload.

Now I'm getting worried about overextending expectations. It's still just
