Barack Obama is still struggling to kick smoking, according to his first
medical examination since becoming president.
Obama is sensitive about his cigarette habit and tetchy with reporters who
raise it. But after his 90-minute medical at the Navy hospital outside
Washington yesterday morning, his doctors confirmed he had not yet managed
to conquer the habit and suggested he "continue smoking cessation efforts".
The doctors said the president used medication to try to ease the pangs,
they described it as "nicotine replacement therapy, self-use".
Obama promised Michelle when he embarked on his campaign to become president
he would quit, at the time he said he was smoking about eight a day.
He told reporters last year he had quit but still had an occasional
cigarette, without specifying how many.
His health was described as excellent and he does not have to return for
another medical until 2012. Obama, who is 48, has 20-20 vision, weighs 179
llbs in his shoes and clothes, and requires little medication. Apart from
the nicotine replacement, he uses a non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication
associated with physical activity: he regularly plays basketball at the
White House.
The doctors also recommended "moderation of alcohol intake".

You mean Obama the alcoholic. Bush didn't drink. Why do you think Obama's
doctors told him to moderate his alcohol intake? Certainly they weren't
thinking that he drank too little and needed to moderate it up. Makes sense,
cigarette smoking, crack snorting, and now this. The man is a weak tit.

Doctors ALWAYS recommend moderation of alcohol intake. According to
doctors more than one drink a day is too much. A doctor telling Obama
to use moderation is normal, all doctors say that to anyone who drinks
socially. An Bush did drink. He is an alcoholic. They hid it from
the press, but he still drank. Remember the prestel incident? He
fell down and choked on a pretzel because he was drunk. And he was a
spoiled rich boy coke head when he was a cheerleader in college too.

Nonsense. My doctor hasn't told me to regulate my alcohol. A quick poll of
my co-workers reveals only one was told to moderate his alcohol. I asked why
and he said he had high blood pressure, he used to drink a 5 pack a day
before changing his lifestyle thanks to his doctor's orders.
Most people who have no drinking problem are not told to moderate their
alcohol. Likewise, non-smokers are not told to cut down on their smoking.
If you have some pictures of Bush drinking that the press hid from the rest
of us, please share, otherwise you are just blowing buttermilk out of your

You're correct. What doctors call moderate alcohol intake is one drink a
couple of times a week. Personally, I never met anyone who drank that
little. Anybody that drinks has more than one and more than once or
twice a week. If you drink less than that you don't drink at all. If you

I am sure you have met people that drink that little, but still
drink. We are out there. Or at least if we ever meet, you will have
met someone that drinks that little. I almost never have more than
one drink in a day but did have two one day in Feb. I got a 12
pack of beer before Thanksgiving and drank the last two this Feb.
It has not been beer drinking weather.

For some people 3-4 drinks a day is moderate. It all depends on your
metabolism and what you are used to. And much of it is what is
considered culturally acceptable. Cultures who grow up with their
food culture centered around beer and wine have people who can easily
handle several drinks worth a day that would put other people who are
not used to it under the table.
No doubt. My point was that there really are a lot of people who can
drink lightly. Or not at all. I think there is a genetic influence too,
look at Amerinds who are so easily addicted to alcohol or Northern
Europeans who seem to have a predilection to nose candy.
The Russians with their Vodka, the Scots with their whiskies, the
English, Irish, and Germans with their beers, and the French with their
wines are all excellent examples of this.
As for me, while once-upon-a-time in my youth I could consume a fifth of
Johnny Walker Red Label and stay sober (big bar tabs in those days), I
bought a 6-pack of beer before Thanksgiving and still have 3 of them left
in the fridge. (Last year, between Thanksgiving and Christmas) I bought a
fifth of Glenfiddich and still have over half of it left.
Some of us just enjoy the flavor(s) but aren't interested in the effects
while others want the effects and are oblivious to everything else. <G>

breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As for Obama, he will smoke anything. When

3 to 4 a day means you are probably an alcoholic.
What does moderate drinking mean?
There is no one definition of moderate drinking, but generally the term is
used to describe a lower risk pattern of drinking. According to the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans,1 drinking in moderation is defined as having no
more than 1 drink per day for women and no more than 2 drinks per day for
men. This definition is referring to the amount consumed on any single day
and is not intended as an average over several days.

President Reagan and Tip O'Neill had drinks together in the oval office. Somehow they
managed to get along. Maybe a bit of adult lubricant helped. Everyone knows you can
solve the worlds problems if you have enough adult lubricant.
As far as President Obama, I'd actually feel better if he has a 'few' to relax when he
needs it. As far as the smoking, he should stop. Think what a good example he could make
if he goes on the patch and kicks the habit. Heck, I'd be willing to listen him give a
speech or two on the difficulties of quitting smoking and the rewards.
I don't want him to die early, just retire earlier than he planned. :) After that, live
long and prosper.

Sorry to have to tell you this but you are not a "moderate" drinker.
What you describe is virtually a non drinker. I used to be a heavy
drinker and now I am a non drinker, have been for I don't even know how
long, maybe a decade. Anyone that consumes as little as you do doesn't
even amount to moderate as far as drinking goes. You're in the "hardly
ever" group. Which is better than moderate.

You know, the names change but the same idiotic baloney just keeps on
coming without letup. That's the thing about conservatives, they are
consistent. My Dad is a conservative. He's 86. He does everything the
same and has for decades. He's a real stick in the mud. I don't see how
he can stand the boredom of his rut. But then it's the comfort they get
from everything being the same that appeals to them. They're all the

Why don't you spice things up for him? Maybe slash him up with your box

Boy will you be surprised when you learn the liberals have sucked your
inheritance dry.
People who drink like what you and Curly describe consume so little
alcohol that you just about fit in the non drinker category. My point is
that people who drink do it a lot more often and drink a lot more than
you lightweights. I used to drink every day. Now I never drink. Not
because I think it's bad or I have to but I just would rather be a non
drinker. When you are a regular drinker you put away a good deal of
alcohol even if you never get drunk or aren't abusing it. Even if you
have several beers two or three times a week that isn't considered a lot
of drinking but compared to you it is. I think that there is a point
where some people drink so little that even though they have a drink now
and then I'd still call them non drinkers. I mean, if you have a
cocktail on New Years and two beers on the Fourth of July are you really
a drinker? I'd say no.
Hawke
Man, I have to admit some of the things you write are pretty funny. They
are such utter nonsense they just make me laugh. Like I just said I
hadn't had a drink in probably a decade yet you go on talking about my
"binges", like nothing even sinks in. My Dad doesn't have either a wheel
chair or stairs. And you would think I'm the liberal that would suck up
my own inheritance, which I intend to do. But your stuff is so far off
kilter and so in error that by accident it's funny. Keep up the good
work. Nonsense and gibberish are working for you. You're an accidental
comedian.
Hawke
My mom has a "fatty" liver too and she doesn't drink either. So I'd say
if you suffer from that condition then it's not from over use of
alcohol. You need to be on a low fat diet with lots of cardio work to
reduce overall bodyfat levels. I'd say six months in a Serbian refugee
camp ought to do the trick for you. Either that or spend a lot more time
in the gym.

You just defined a "moderate drinker" above as: "What doctors call
moderate alcohol intake is one drink a couple of times a week." A bottle
of wine every 7-14 days qualifies by that definition, 14 proof, 7%, by
750 ml is about 3oz of alcohol, no?
