I am using an old computer with a 1.0 USB port and want to try using a
webcam as a magnifier glass. Some of the higher resolution web cams
need a USB 2.0 port to work. So I went looking for a PCI USB card on
Ebay. And found a seller digitalzone88 in China selling a card for
$3.68 including shipping. And while ordering the card, I also looked
at all the other things for sale.

The site has RS232/RS485 converters for $3.46 including shipping.
Useful if you want to control something a long ways from your
computer. Some three phase VFD's have a RS485 input. So added that
to the order.

And they has 3 watt LED flashlights that use just one AA battery for
$1.64 including shipping. Well they really are not 3 Watt LED
flashlights, but they are a nice little one led flashlight with an
aluminum body with a o-ring seal on the threaded joint. And they do
work on just one AA battery.

They have a lot more things for sale that I did not buy. But RCM
people might like some of them. digital calipers, photo tachs.

Buyer beware. The flashlights were not as described. But are worth
what they cost.

If worse comes to worse - you can get a USB 2 Hub and most allow for
usb 1.1 or 2 as an input. Speed is one thing, the pull up resistors
are removed on 2 and used on 1 and 1.1. I have the specs...

If you can live without the speed. I have both 1.1 and 2 mixed on this machine.

I am nearly good to go now. The USB card is a five port usb 2.0 card
with four ports on the bracket and one for connecting a cable to
provide a couple of ports on the front of the computer. The only
drawback for me is that it is not a low profile card and the computer
I am using really needs a low profile card. I had to take the bracket
off the card to install it and now can not put the cover back on the
case. I am going to cut off the top usb port which will let me put
the cover back on the case. If that kills the card, well it is less
than $4 to get another.

The reason I posted this is the very low prices this
merchant ,digitalzone88, has on things that RCM readers may want. The
digital calipers look exactly like the ones that Harbor Freight
sells. And for about half the Harbor Freight sale price. All the
stuff is " Buy it now " so less waiting and no wondering if your bid
will be enough.

How about a universal card reader* for a $1 (+$1.99 shipping) or an
extra fan that uses a PCI slot ($1 + $1.78):

* - if you're an old-timer computer-wise, when you see "card reader",
you think of a desk-sized machine for reading IBM punch cards <G>.

How about 90-column ROUND-holed Univac cards instead of the RECTANGULAR-
holed Hollerith cards or, just maybe, the mini-punched 150-character ROUND-
holed cards that IBM flogged along with the automatic telephone dialers?

FWIW, *somewhere* around here I should still have a box or two of
5081s...unpunched! [They make *marvelous* bookmarks, notepads, etc.]
