Sword knots are invariably forms of sinnetting and/or turks heads--both
are which are beyond the capacity to describe in text form.
I would suggest either purchasing a book dedicated to the subjects
described above or doing a web search on "sword" and "knot". I
recommend http://www.militaryheritage.com/knot.htm.

No, no, no, you misunderstand. A Renaissance Faire peace tie is just a
thong that prevents the sword from being drawn. 99% of them don't use
any sort of decorative knot, just a simple bow.

Oh, I understand now. Is there some requirement at the Ren Faire to have
such a knot if one carries in a weapon?
Oh, BTW, it is my understanding that such a knot originated in the
medieval period wherein it was assumed that tempers would cool for
the amount of time it took undoing the knot, and as such these
knots were quite complex, not simple at all.

Not at all of them, but at most it is a requirement. Drawing steel in
any but specifically delineated circumstances (such as during
performances, demonstrations, and lessons or in "backstage" area not
accessible to the public) can get you ejected from the site.

Don't know about that, I haven't encountered the concept in my
Renaissance literature, but if so it would only be appropriate for
very specific times and places, such as at court (where everyone would
probably have a poignard, anyway). In medieval times, if you had a
sword, you were wealthy enough that you could or needed to travel a
bit, putting yourself at risk of encountering feudal enemies or
robbers. Imagine having weapon is tied down by a complex knot when
being accosted by a highwayman, much less an enemy knight in search of
a shrubbery.

Exactly! Faires that DO allow patrons to carry weapons almost always
require peace ties. Some use plastic zipties over whatever is done by
the patron, as a matter of policy.
Prevents bystanders from drawing YOUR weapon when tempers flare, and
also prevents theft. Or some idiot from grabbing your weapon "see?
it's not really sharp... oops"

Doesn't have to be too complex, just enough of an irritant to cause a
little thought.

Hi Tim! (waves) you don't know me, but I feel like I know you. I used
to hang out in afr a lot. My computer at home went south on me and my
server at work doesn't do alt groups (and I always forget to do the
deja thing), so I've lost my otterness. 8^( Can't even take the
renGeek test at northern 'cuz I've been out of the loop too long.
On the bright side, RPFN is only 15 minutes from my house this year!
