Hello,

This is probably going to be a really stupid question, but does anyone
know if there's anything like an "adjustable" stopper knot?

What I'd like to be able to do is tie the stopper knot, then slide it up
the standing part (to make it snug with perhaps another knot I'd tied
earlier). At the same time I'd like the knot act like a stopper and
not have it be able to slide back towards the working end.

Usually if I want to do something like this, I'd have to work the knot
up the standing part... while it would be so much easier if the knot
could simply slide.

I know that there probably is no such knot, as any knot that could be
slid up the standing part could probably equally easily be slid back
down the working end... but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice on this matter.

The only knot I can think of would be a Prusik knot. It slides up a rope
but as soon as it is pulled down it jams. You'd need to make the loop small
enough to be neat.

But that's probably not what you are looking for at all.

Not knowing your application, I'll just throw this out:

Use a bead or ring for the stopper itself and put it on a loop made with
a taut line hitch. Adjusting the size of the loop adjusts the overall
length of the rope.

An alternative would be a Turk's Head made round the standing part. That
would slide up the rope, but it might slide down too. Time to get the hot
glue gun out!

Hmm, traditionally knots that slide in one direction but not the other are
things like the rolling hitch or a prussik. But those slide upon a taut
line, and depend on some tension in them to stay in place. A stopper knot,
on the other hand, lays tightly against a hole, block, or something else,
and the line after it is slack. In effect a stopper knot is a thing under
compression, whereas all other types of knots work under tension.

If you could rearrange your setup so that the sliding knot could be put
under tension instead of compression, you might use almost any suitable
hitch. But if you can not, I am afraid you need to build your device of a
material that can handle compression - in other words, some sort of
mechanical lock, probably of plastic, wood, or metal.

Good luck, and tell us what you find out - or even where your problem comes
from. Sounds like an interesting question!

Regards

Heikki

Perhaps if you describe the specific task you are attempting, the
group might be able to suggest solutions that best fit, even if the
solution may attack the problem from a different approach that what
you might have in mind.
