Hi,
I need to resize a ring (make it one size smaller), which I made for
my GF out of brass, and I need to know what solder is considered safe
to have a contact with skin. Don't ask me why brass - I made the ring
out of something special that just happend to be brass.
I want to make sure that solder does not cause irritation, or other
unfavourable consequences.
I will plate the ring once I resize it.
Thank you.
Yan.

Hello Yan,

There is a 'hi-temp' solder used by the canning industry that may suit your
purpose. It is an alloy of tin and about 1% or so of silver. Any good
electronic supply shop should have access to it. If not, try Kester Inc.

There is a lot of misunderstanding on this board about soldering. So, I hope
you have experience in the matter. Brass in difficult to solder because it
acts like a sponge during manufacture and soaks up all kinds of nasty stuff
that wells out when heated and contaminates the joint. A good flux and
pre-tinning are essential.

Inspect the finished joint for good intermetallics or amalgamation. This
will assure strength and not having soldered only one side of the joint.

Good luck.
