I recently bought a necklace with three charms on it: a heart, a cross, and an
anchor. I was informed that they stand for charity, faith, and hope. Which
symbolizes which?? I'm pretty sure the cross symolizes faith, I think the heart
symbolizes charity, but why does the anchor symbolize hope? Help would be
greatly appreciated as it is a Valentine's Day gift and I'd like to explain the
charms' significance in the card. Thank you.

You are right in your interpretation of the symbols. The anchor symbolising hope
comes from the biblical reference of Hebrews 6:19, where Paul describes hope as
"an
anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast". The other two are fairly
self-explanatory. Incidentally, the three are usually referred to in the order
of
"Faith, Hope and Charity" -- don't ask me why!!

Hope the gift works... :-)

The order of Faith, Hope, and Charity probably originates with the children's
song:

"Faith, Hope, and Charity, that's the way to live successfully,
How do I know, the Bible tells me so".

At least, that would be my guess.

Cheers,

Ralph
