In my opinion, for what it's worth, if you want to deal with some great
companies, Stuller, Rio Grande, and Swest can't be beat. And I consider
myself to be a small purchaser since my largest purchase was only about $
3,000.00 and most of my purchases are between $100.00 and $500.00.
Regardless of the size of purchase I have always received the same excellent
service from each of the companies listed.
Cheers,
Ralph

I, for one, am sorry to see Swest go. They had a discount for our Metals
Guild. It made them hard to beat AND you could save on postage with a hike
downtown. If that is also gone, the days of ganging up with other jewelers to
place huge metal orders are back.

There are different levels of selling. If you eliminate 'simply money
hungry morons' from the above, the source of your difficulty dealing
with them is clear. You are not a large buyer. I have never dealt with
Stuller, and my only experience with Swest goes back to the days before
they were Swest. Their name was something like South West Smelting and
Refining, and I heard the same complaints against them, then, as you
make against Stuller.
I believe it was the pressure of everybody and his siblings jumping on
the Indian style jewelry bandwagon that caused them to revise their way
of doing business. In any case, I did not take to the hype that came
with the change and took my middling business elsewhere.
<Grin> If you think Stuller makes you feel like 'dirt on their feet,' as
a little guy, try getting into the door of a decent size NY gem dealer,
with only a grand or two in your pocket. Some of those guys can leave
you walking away thinking you smell like dog poop.

Swest is operating under Swest's rules, and with Swest's catalog, not
Stuller's. That means you don't have to be huge.

Funny, I got orders from them 3 times a week for 3 years and had VERY few
problems. I found their ordering people helpful and knowledgeable, and their
product of consistant, high quality.
On the downside their credit people are a bit of a pain and their product
is just a touch more expensive. From a jewelers standpoint though its just so
much easier to get everything I need and get it the next morning that its hard
for me to justify going somewhere else.
I'm always open for sugestions though.
