Do some jewelers have machines that can engrave on a ring whatever font that
is typed into it?

I got a 14K gold ring and I also found tengwar cursive fonts on the net that
are suppose to be the closest to the inscription on Lord of the Rings ring.
I have figured out what type on a keyboard to make it be very similar to the
Lord of the Rings ring.

If I gave an engraver these fonts and keystroke combinations would he be
able to set a machine to engrave it on my ring? I guess I'm trying to find
out if machines like this are common. I'm currently stuck in Cebu City
Philippines and wont be in the states for several months but nothing exists
like that here.

Just for peoples info if interested go find tengwar cursive and type this:

outside ring
A#5,Dx26Hw1Dj^zYBN= A#5,Dxxw{G1Dj^

inside ring
A#5,Dx3zD1Dj^zYN= X#w6^8|tYA%`Bz7q{T1Dj^

I'm glad you posted that, I was going to program this engraving the hard way
(lines and arcs).
If you cant find a jeweler that can do it find a machine shop with a CNC
mill, it wont be cheap. My guess will be $200 at least, as this is
custom work on a 4 axis mill and only one piece. I'm going to make mine, but
won't sell any for fear of infringement.

Aloha Ahh,
Actually, most engraving program will accept Truetype or Postscript fonts. You
need to to either send the font(out of windows font folder) or change it to
curves in an illustration program doing vector art, like CorelDRAW or Adobe
Illustrator ( though then they are not editable, once you do that). Hope that
helps.

Hello-

What your looking for is a CNC jewelry router. I think Rio sells them.
I suppose programing it to do high elvish would be a easy as anything
else. There are true type fonts avalible for download in at least two
dialects of elvish. This is not a tool I own but I'd bet that would do
the job.

Before LOTR was cool I had an hand engraved ring with runes on the
inside and outside. The jeweler who did it used a simple graver. The
sad thing is that for all the work involved he was about giving them
away to pay rent. :( So maybe hand work is an option to? Guess it
depends on how much time you want to spend.

Consider computer-controlled laser engraving. Supply the font (probably for
windows) and a text file.

Most real jewelry engraver do not use machines to do the engraving but rather
do it by hand and can copy what you give them to engrave. The "Engravers that
use machine are not really engravers but rather untrained store clerks who have
a machine that scratches letters onto a machine.

I can't answer whether engraving machines can handle it, but the best
engraving (including replication of unusual fonts and shapes) is done by the
artistry of HAND engravers. As these artists exist all over the world, I'd
suggest taking a look at that as an interesting option.

Good luck!

Aloha Gang,
I am a classically trained Modelmaker, Jeweler, and also hand engraver. I took
up CNC machining over 15 years ago. All tech nology is only a tool to realize
your expected vision or outcome. As far as production is concerned, CNC is the
way to go. If a one off is what is required, hand engraving or CNC is an
option. If you want to see what is available check out our website(S). By the
way the lord of the rings ring for the movie was done in 3D software and output
with Stereolithography, the Collectable reproductions are made in China and
probably made by the same process. I know, because I wanted bid on the job. CNC
Could have done the job. Just thought you may want to know.

HeH. The imagination one must have to think copying something made up in
total is somehow cute and original. No wonder there is -such- variety.
