Hi all,

I have seen tons of lamps lately at several retailers made by Dale Tiffany. The
prices are plumb CHEAP. This was mostly lamps -- the Arts & Crafts styles I
checked out were 15-20" on nice heavy bases (metal) for around $110-150.
Assuming the merchant gets a 30% cut, this leaves a pittance for the artist(?)
himself.

Who is Dale Tiffany? Is this a real person (with a very recognizable last name)
or a company marketing factory-made products, or what? How can he sell stuff
that cheap? Anybody know?

Thanks,
Judy - N.C.

He can sell the lamps cheap because they are made in China.

Fat chance.

Chet, I think we have a winner here.

I suspect Dale Tiffany is related to Dave Gillooly, and shares the same genius for
marketing, although they're feeding at opposite ends of the pond. It is a very
safe bet these days that if something is highly labor intensive and is being sold
dirt cheap, that it was made in China. Once they (the Chinese) start turning out
quality work (which I am sure they can, but so far seem inclined not to do) most
of us who make a living with our hands will have a problem...

(Hmmm, sounds like flame bait to me :::chuckle:::)

Dale Tiffany is not a who, but a what.
A rather sizeable glass studio, factory style. Whether or not it is still
in Korea, I am not sure, they moved to mainland China, I understand(not
fact), and then moved back, of was that Ko Ting, maker of lamps and very
recognizable bronze bases. Anyway, Dale Tiffany is a factory, headquartered
in Korea, owned and operated by a fella by the name of Chung. All the US
glass factories know them, he buys more in one order than most distributors!

Rumors are that some of the lamps are made with prision labor. But
mainly most are made by small companies utilizing a very large
workforce...families, ect. While the wages that they are paid over there
may seem like slave wages...many of these families and employees know of
no other difference. Just as if you were born without an arm...you would
have no idea what life was like with two arms.

Only one way to find out, go visit. I have know personal idea, but I
believe Dale Tiffany lamps are now still made in Korea, and China is the
place infamous for the prison/slave labor as i understand it.

JCPenny has some of the "Dale Tiffany" lamps in their catalog... They
are "handcrafted" in China....

Yeah, well, so does Wal-Mart. What does that tell ya? And, I'm ashamed to
say, I bought one! At $20, I just couldn't resist it, even if it was made
in China!
