I remember in the late 70's there were alternative energy shows everywhere with people promoting their stills for producing various types of alcohol for fuel. Also many books and kits available. Now I understand that distilling alcohol in the US for use as a personal fuel (not for sale) is illegal without a permit.

Is this something that was enacted since the 70's?

Can someone who has personally gone thru the process of getting a permit (not just read or heard about it) tell how to do it and what the cost & limitations are?

Bob

Yes, the industrial fuel permit is free and involves filling out a single
form. You can download it from http://www.ttb.gov/forms/f511074.pdf and
fill it out. Sign it and mail it and go. I have not heard of anyone with
a reasonable request being turned down.

You must denature it almost instantly after distillation unless you want to
pay a tax on it.

It's been around since Prohibition without much real change.
