Does anyone know where I can get my 5 lb CO2 tank refilled in the
Pittsburgh, PA area? The place my LHBS suggested seemed a bit pricey
at $30/fill, or is that a decent price?

Thanks.

That's pretty expensive. I think I pay around $11 for a 5 lbs CO2 tank
and $15 for a 20 lbs CO2 tank refill in Maryland. Look around for welding
places as well as fire extinguisher places.

Here in VA, a 5# runs about $15.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone run a BIG bottle? I might have a
line on some 50# CO2 cylinders... wondering what would be a typical rate to have them
filled. It'll be for homebrew as well as paintball (yes I know you need a "liquid"
type tank for paintball).

My brother-in-law gets his CO2 kegerator tank (5 lb I believe) filled
at a restaurant supply house for about $12 in upstate NY. So $30 is
expensive.

Probably not much more than a 10 pound tank. The price for refilling
CO2 canisters seems to have a large, fixed handling cost. Most of the
price of CO2 is the effort required to fill the tank.

I pay around $22 + tax to refill a 20 lb'er in MD, south of Baltimore...

Indeed. The gas costs next to nothing. Just about all of the price is in
the labor to do the fill. I don't know how much a 50 lbs cylinder would
be to fill, but I'm sure it would be a major pain to move around.

Thanks for all the replies, especially on the price. I'll just have to
make some calls. For any other Pittsburghers out there, I'll post
whatever I places I find to this thread.

At which business in MD, and where, do you pay $15 for a 20lb refill? I'd
like to use them instead of my $22+ refiller, if it's near enough.

My child bride gets me a 5-lb CO2 refill for $14 or $15 at
Roberts Oxygen on Caton Ave. We live in Ellicott City so
if anyone knows of a place in Howard County, please tell me.

Advice to our colleague in Pittsburgh.
1) $30 for a 5-lb refill is not pricey. It's price gouging.
2) Call other LHBS' for pricing and referrals to refillers.
3) Ask contractors you meet in the Contractor Check-Out line
at Home Depot where they buy their CO2 and O2.

At some point, there is a trade-off between price and convenience
as in I live less than a half mile from my local Home Depot so
I'd have to get Propane refills for $5 before it would be worth
my child bride's time to get them else where.

Nice, I hear alot about wives helping their man brew their beer and
bottle it. Im lucky to get mine to drink my beer let alone help me
make it and fill up co2!

This is the place, although it's been awhile since I got my tank filled.
I've been brewing a lot less since having kids recently, so haven't needed
to get my 20lbs CO2 tank topped off. Their prices may have gone up some.

They're just off of 695, exit 9 I think.

I use a fire extinguisher place off of 695 (not Howard County, but it's
reasonably close), see my other post. Does Roberts Oxygen swap tanks or
do they fill the one you bring in while you wait?

I use the Roberts Oxygen in Glen Burnie. I swap tanks. It's possible to
leave your tank for a refill, but they don't do it there, so I'd have to
return days later to get the tank back. I'm too impatient to do that.......
I'd probably have to go into the city to the Caton Ave office to be able to
refill on the spot - if they do "while you wait" refills there - I don't
know because I've never tried it.

Last December 13th I paid $23.43 for a 20 lb bottle, includes tax in Glen
Burnie. I'm going to call Fireline to get their price. Fireline on Hollins
Ferry road is not very much farther than Roberts in Glen Burnie for me - if
it's cheaper I'll give them a try.

complained about the long wait while they refilled.

Where is this fire extinguisher flace near 695. Make me happy
and say 695 and 40.

I was out in Frederick today. One of our stops was at Air-Gas
where they let me swap a medical oxygen tank for one I can get
refilled. I asked about CO2 refills and the answer was $7.50
for 5lbs and $22.50 for 20lbs.

Me and Vinny at AGA Gases are like *this*!
I'll happily transport propane and CO2, but have drawn the line at O2
and acetylene (which has to remain upright, anyway)

Are you saying you and Vinny run AGA Gases? If so, where are you?

No, it's a couple exits down. I think 695 and 40 is exit 14, or something
like that. The fire extinguisher place is on exit 9, the other side of
95 from us. It doesn't take too long to get there though.

I guess $23.43 isn't too bad, then.

No, sorry. It's just that he doesn't get many women schlepping
cylinders, so he always asks what's brewing.

I live in Tarentum, just 15 miles north of Pittsburgh. There's a place
called Greco's that refills my tanks. I think a 5 lb is $11 and a 20
lb is 25 or something like that. I'm not sure which LHBS you went to
but there is another place called Vince's out by crafton. If you have
questions just give me a call. I own my own LHBS.
www.benshomebrew.com. 724-409-1050. Hope this helps.

All my life I have wanted women to schlep for me. Now that I am
retired, a kept man, and can't drive, I need an extra woman for
schlepping, cleaning, and quality control testing.

Actually, I work right near Crafton, so that would work out great.
Where exactly is Vince's? I'll be sure to check out your website.
Thanks!

That's what I get for a tank swap.. I'd check on just a fill, but the
gas shop is 1 block from my office and the tank is crappy :)
