Hi all,
Any suggestions? Especially for Quebec microbrews or stuff not normally
found in Ontario (Toronto). Or, just a nice place with the usual pub
selection (Guiness, Smithwicks etc. - BTW here in Ontario our antiquated and
restrictive liquor laws also mean that we get very few of the excellent
micros - midsized breweries from the US as well. (Oh, I would love a
Brooklyn Brown or a Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, but noooooooooooo,
we can't have that - it might upset Labatt's or Molson's and we wouldn't
want tht would we?)) with a really nice atmosphere.
Sorry about that digression/rant/use of multiple parentheses, but can
anybody tell me whether that sorry situation is true in La Belle Province as
well?
Any and all opinions welcome - will be going in a couple of weeks.
Thanks,
Geoff Ruby

Try McAuslan Breweries'(my personal Favorite) St Ambroise Pale Ale,
Oatmeal Stout, or Griffon Brown in bottle or on tap (pubs listed
below), or the amazing Cream Ale on Tap only (N2 dispensed). Another
micro is Boreal. They make a good "Rousse" (red) and Stout, among
others. Then there's the Belgian style Ales from Unibroue (La Fin du
Monde, La Maudite, Raftman, Trois Pistoles, etc...) BTW, but unlike in
Ontario, we can get all of the above (and more- including your favorite
Molson product) at the nearest convenience store !!!

Or, just a nice place with the usual

Try Else's Pub on Roy St. 1 or 2 blocks east of St. Laurent Blvd (I
hope it's still open- unfortunately, 6 months ago or so the owner
(Else, of course) passed away. I haven't heard that it has closed,
though). If you're downtown, try Hurley's Irish Pub on Crescent st,
MacGibbin's Irish Pub on Bishop. In NDG try Ye Olde Orchard Pub on
Monkland Ave, and if you're north of Montreal, in a town called
Rosemere (15-20 km north on Hwy 15)there's a pub (my "local") called Le
Puit du Dragon" (The Dragon's Well). They don't sell Molson or
Labatt's AT ALL !! (there's a reason to go !!)

For brewpubs, try Le Sargent Recruiteur (Sargents to us maudit
blokes)on St Laurent St, Dieu du Ciel on Laurier Ave near the corner of
St. Laurent, Brewtopia on Crescent St. (just upstairs from Hurley's),
L'Amere a Boire on St. Denis St, or Barrels & Vessels in Pointe Claire
on St. John's Blvd.

YUP- But at least there's salvation in the above establishments. You
might find more info at www.bieremag.ca.

I hope this helps,

Woody

I think the situation is "less worst" here in Montréal. If ever you come by, I
would warmly suggest "Le cheval blanc" (wich I don't have the address in mind),
and even more strongly "Le sergent recruteur" on St-Laurent street, on the
corner of Villeneuve street. I no more go to that last place by car since I
know I will need to come back home by taxi. And if ever you have a chance to
meet Michel, the brewer, you'll like him very much!!!

As far as places with good selections of brews on tap (not necessarily
microbrews but good stuff) I would recommend Hurley's Irish Pub on Crescent
street , (they must have over 20 + things there ) and the Celtic on St.
Jacques street a bit west of Cavendish, (its in the same building as a super
C grocery store youll see the sign).. Those 2 places have all your
favourites along those lines - Smithwicks, Guinness, Harp, Bass, Tartan
Special, Caffreys, etc... the Celtic used to carry Caledonian which i have
learned is apparently no longer being exported so its not available any more

Another former great microbrew place was 'la maison des bieres importees'
which burned down a while ago..

hope it helps

I forgot to mention "Le Futembule" on Bernard st., just 1/2 bolck east Park
Avenue. It is not a brewery at all but they have quite an excellent selection of
imported beers from all over the world.

Cheers,
