Wah! The Beader's Guide to Color has failed me. (Ok, I've failed it, but
I'd rather put the blame on someone else.)

I'm so frustrated. I'm about to give up. I can't figure out how to do the
fringe on my amulet bag. Ok, I wanted to wait until it was finished to show
it, but I need some serious help.

I've done it and re-done it several times and I'm still not happy. I had it
completely finished once and took it apart, and almost finished another
time. I just keep trying different things.

I did these, and I'm just not happy with the colors:

http://www.beadbimbo.com/ebay/bfly.jpg

and

http://www.beadbimbo.com/ebay/bfly2.jpg which is a little better, but not
there.

Now I'm thinking of using most of the colors that are in the butterfly, but
I'm ready to toss it aside and just quit for now. (And pay my DD to sort
all the beads that I've gotten all jumbled together all over the place.)

I think I'm stuck with using the pink swarovski on the bottom because I just
don't have anything else that goes. That part I'm not unhappy with though.

I'm sooooooooooooooooo frustrated! I think I need to go to bed and call it
quits! Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Jerri, my $.02 worth is that theres too much blue in the fringe---thats why
the second one is better but not quite there....maybe try the green and
yellow and pink without the blue except maybe a bead or two's worth....?

Couple suggestions: Mainly I'd say there is no contrast in the fringe, as
there is in the butterfly. Try breaking up that blue by alternating tones
of the same blue, light and dark.. Try adding a few black beads, especially
at the ends of the Swarovskis . Perhaps a band of a light/dark blue, then
solid bands of other colours spaced by a black bead. Not too much black,
just enough to give the eye some place to rest and define the fringe
pattern.

I think I'd break the colors up with single black beads like the
butterfly has. Like a strand of the main light blue ending with a
sequence 1black, 2yellow, 1 black, 1lt pink 2 dark pink, 1 black etc.
Black or white change the look of the colors they are next to. You
always have to keep them in smilar proportions to your bag or the
colors will look really different.

I usually stay out of any seed beading discussions since I'm no good at
it myself, but I was thinking that echoing the lower half of the
butterfly wings in the fringe would look good.

Jerri,
Kerry does not do patterns on her amulet bags, but I think you should
consider using colors that are not in the bag but,are complimentary. Also,
more variety in the fringe, throw in some other kinds, sizes, or shapes of
beads or even other materials(silver,etc).
It kind of depends on what you want. "The fringe queen" says there is no
such thing as too much or too wild fringe.
The strands do not have to be the same in color or composition, let your
"wild child" out and throw some really off the wall stuff in there.
Use different colors of crystals on various strands. You could make some
narrow peyote, yes you can do that now, patches(3-4 beads wide) to hang on
or in the strands.
You could even use some small lampwork beads on the strands. I wonder where
you could find some of those??????

Thanks everyone, for the suggestions! Believe it or not, I think it's
helping. If I don't take the scissors to the whole bag, I may play with the
fringe again. This will teach me to stick to simpler patterns so I don't
have to make any more decisions!!!

I'd do a rainbow - just like the butterfly, and put black crystals on the
ends. :)

I'd also offer the suggestion that the proportions are incorrect. I
think for a bag that wide, the fringe needs to be very long, and lush,
maybe two layers, with the one in front longer than the one in back.
Mix up the textures too...use seed beads of different sizes...and HAVE
FUN with it...loosen up...

That was my thought, too. The fringe is too short for the bag.

I'll also add that czech glass drop and dagger beads work really,
really well for ending fringe. The fringe could be done in the same
colors as the butterfly wings, but with blue drops to finish the fringe
strands off. The pink crystals could be used higher up in the fringe,
so the fringe went something like this: seed beads, swarovski crystal,
a few more seed beads (or not), czech drop/dagger bead.
