ME!

Six months ago (six weeks ago!), I would have just drooled and
insisted I couldn't have created such lovelies. But on July 4th, I
made a committment to nurture her so that she could flourish. She
would love to try, so I'm with you, Tink.

LOL! Yeah.... I think that would be a GREAT idea! Tell us about yourself!

So here's my idea: I am going to try to get my hands on some optical lenses.
Or do you think we should try the slides first? I think I've also seen some
way cool picture frame type charms done with slide covers and the soldered
copper foil thing around the edges.

Maybe we should make this a bona fide challenge and/or trade?

For anyone who is interested, there is a set of optical lenses on eBay right
now:
http://tinyurl.com/ipf4

Looks like there are a lot of them in the set, too. I would get them, but
finances won't allow it right now. But for goodness sake! If someone here
plans to bid and share, let people know so y'all don't end up bidding
against one another.

Tink, Ronda Kivett, whose website is Vintage French Toast, (sorry I
don't have a URL handy...) does an art zine (Creative Spirit Bead E
Art Zine) and the last issue had a tutorial in it by Rebekah Hodous
(hope I spelled her name right...she also has a website...) on how to
make those slide thingies with copper tape, and also how to hide wire
inside to wrap and/or make the loop at the top.

Also, Ronda has a mixed media art forum on Delphi and somebody there
(I think?) mentioned a tutorial where you can use UTEE (ultra-thick
embossing enamel) melted in a hot pot, and dip your slide into that.
Someone else said they just built up layers of the UTEE (basically a
stamper's embossing powder), embossing them as they went along.

On that wonderful webpage Sooz sent -- I loved the slide pendant with
the little corner finding at the bottom. Great idea.

But to me some of the loops at the top looked a bit fragile for a
pendant that is worn. A little wall thing, maybe ok.

Nice eye candy.

Haw! Yeah -- behave or....or....I'll have to stop for ice cream!

I'm trying to determine how much to proxy bid/snipe for this item. Just
emailed the seller to get the number of lenses. You can buy a lens for $4 each
here: http://www.artchixstudio.com/mall/abother.asp

But I'd pay $5 each (or maybe a bit more) if I could get a whole slew of 'em,
like this case. Other eyes are watching this auction, I'm sure. So -- we'll
see what happens.

Also look for glass slides...the ones they used to use for slide projectors.
About 2 years ago I got some in 1x1" and 2x2" and made collaged charms and
charm bracelets.

I see that even places like j.jill and chico's are selling the microscope
slide necklaces now.

another thing that I've recently started using are pocket watch crystals.
they also are a lot of fun to do reverse collage on. you can then fill then
with a resin and solder around them and solder on a ring for hanging...i
have to find where i stored the pics so i can upload some.

if anyone wants to try them, i have a ton of crystals.

OK. I didn't get in on last month's challenge, but I am more settled

I just ordered some waterslide decals to experiment with, and I think
they would work well with the 'slide sandwich' technique. What do you

I try to expend as little energy as possible when I'm working on jewelry, so
getting the slides already cut to squares was important for me. (I'm not
really lazy -- honest) Otherwise, I get worn out just preparing to work on
jewelry. :-o whew

Okay all:
1) look on ebay for the glass slides. they pop up fairly regularly (so of
course, you'll never see them again)

2) if you asked for watch crystals, I have them put aside. Those who I have

Please make sure I have your address.

Ok, now you know what Sooz has done to ME!
I was a happy beader till Sooz started
sending me these links on the sly......and
the next thing I knew, I'd drifted away from
beading....and found myself into COLLAGE and
ALTERED BOOKS and STUFF LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!

It's all Sooz's fault!!!!!!!!!! <tee hee>
Thank you, Sooz, for all you share here!!!

Overload is good for you....then you sleep. That's how it works. :-) Then
you wake up ten times more creative after internalizing. Yayy!

But mostly, I'm just a massive enabler.

>Why oh why oh why oh WHY are you people so intent on never letting me sleep
>EVER AGAIN??? :-)

This week after work I am going to spend my evenings viewing this list. I
already had a look at the illuminated letter site. Thank you for posting
this Sooz.

I have been in something of a slump recently and realised part of the reason
for this is that I loaned my brother my visual diary (he is scanning images
for my in-progress website). I asked for it back today, it's so important to
my creative process.

And I'm so fixated on the microscope slide pendants that I can't think about
anything else. I found a local source for slides, and now I have to track
down the 1/4" copper foil and lead free solder. Does Home Depot have lead
free solder?

Haw haw! Tink, you sound like me when I get one of those buzzes on.

Try a stained glass supply store.

Well, I have my blank slides and I have my solder. None of the stained glass
places were open today, so no copper foil. Just so y'all know and don't
waste a trip, Michael's didn't have copper foil.

Now I'm digging through all my vintage calling cards and stuff for goodies
to play with!

I suggest making color photocopies, Tink, if you want to cut the art up or glue
it.

First of all, if it's vintage paper, it's precious. That's good stuff to many
of us out there! Don't cut it up or glue it, not that you're ever going to
resell it....it's just lovely stuff, and you don't want to abuse it. I
wouldn't be able to ruin items like that with scissors or goop, it'd kill me.
Like when Ralph Lauren cut up gorgeous old quilts to make skirts.

Second, you can reuse the image if you photocopy it. If you want to charge a
whole lot more for it, go ahead and use originals.

Does this hold true if it's torn and not whole? I've always saved scraps of
paper but never found anything to do with them. LOL!

Those are so cool! The beautiful redheaded girl who first taught me to
make lampwork beads way-back-when used to make something like those,
with pressed flowers.

Find a local stained glass shop for both, or try online.

I've gotten this kind of thing from Warner-Crivellaro:
