I have been trying to retrieve consigned work from Lora Andersen, who owns
Life's a Peach Gallery in Oak Ridge, TN, since early February. I'll give you
a quick run-down of my efforts thus far.
The first time I e-mailed her and asked her to send my merchandise back to
me (Feb. 8), she responded that she would do so the first week of March, as
she was terribly busy. I responded that I was completely happy with that,
and would even pay her mailing costs. I also gave her my mailing address,
just in case she had lost it.
The first week of March came & went. I e-mailed Lora again, around the end
of March, asking for an update regarding my merchandise (offering again to
pay for postage, and giving her my mailing address). No response. I
e-mailed her again last week, this time telling her I was getting a little
nervous, etc.... Once again, no response. I personally know of at least two
other people who have told me this also happened to them.
I am wondering if any of her friends who regularly read this newsgroup could
tell me if something has happened with Lora's gallery, or with Lora
personally. I have enjoyed dealing with her over this last year, even though
I haven't sold much through her. Up until these most recent events, she has
always been very responsive and helpful.
I am not trying to hurt Lora's reputation. Very honestly, I am only trying
to retrieve my merchandise from her. I live in Montana, and simply cannot
afford to travel to Tennessee to get it back. I have always dealt very
honestly and politely with Lora, and I'm puzzled and saddened by this sudden
turn of events.
I know I took a chance consigning my merchandise with a complete stranger,
so please don't lecture me about that. And please do not accuse me of
slander -- what I have related to you here is the unembellished truth. I'm
not looking to get flamed by Lora's defenders - I don't like 'anonymous
internet horror stories' either. Rather, I am hoping they will relay this
message to her and let her know that I'm trying to get in touch with her,
since my own most recent efforts have failed. Also, I realize Lora is VERY
busy and probably a bit over-extended. However, I think by now she has had
enough time to put my merchandise (jewelry & loose lampworked beads) in a
box and return it to me.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer. Trish Little

You're the fourth person I've heard of with this problem. You might
want to contact the Oak Ridge police.

However, IBS is coming to Ohio, both to Cleveland and to Cincinnati and if all
else fails, I will be there to snatch my stuff off her table. I can't imagine
that she would have the balls to bring my own work that she refuses to return
to Ohio, but I know she had it at the show in Atlanta. Because my customers
told me they saw it there.
Check the schedule at www.beadshows.com to see if she is coming anywhere near
you in the future.
Again, I am NOT cutting on or condeming the IBS shows in any way. They have
GREAT beads and good prices and I will shop there again. It is just where I
met her and gave her my work, and it looks like that is where I will have to go
to get it back.

Nancy -- I thought about this, and it just doesn't feel right. It is not the
show organizers fault that they have a vendor who runs her business in a shoddy
manner. The pieces were for the gallery, even though she also sells them at
the bead shows. I am sure they know, because the read this board regularly.
This I know because the other vendors used to regularly quote back to me stuff
I have said here, LOL.

I reported my experience with her to the Oak Ridge Police, and also to the
Better Business Bureau. I'm not really sure the police will have any
jurisdiction, but at least there will be something on record. If any of you
are interested in reporting her to the Better Business Bureau, go to
http://216.46.242.4/complaints/company.asp
You will find information there on filing a complaint, and a form which you
can fill out and submit via the internet. I think it is extremely important
that everyone who has been defrauded by Lora file a complaint with the BBB,
so that others thinking of consigning with her will be forewarned if they
check her business out with the BBB first.
I would imagine that her crimes could be considered federal offenses, since
she has conducted business over state lines, and via the U.S. mail. Those of
us who have consigned with her and failed to have our merchandise returned
to us upon request should not take this lightly.
Best of luck to those of you who are still trying to retrieve your
merchandise. I feel we have all learned a cruel lesson. What Lora has done
to all of us certainly does NOT reaffirm my belief in the dignity and honor
of humanity. Take care. Trish

One thing about the site Rita, and maybe it's only me, but the titles in the
pink boxes are kind of hard for me to read. I'm not sure if it's the font or
the way you saved them but they look kind of blurry to me. I've got my

Good luck with your the piece for the art show!!

I didn't want to post but do to all the problems posted with Lora
Anderson and Life's a Peach I feel I must.
I was hired to teach at the Bead Retreat 2000. It was put on my Lora.
It was the worst event I have ever been involved with. Several of the
other teachers and I have been wondering if we should come out with the
truth about this event. I feel both Students and Teachers where taken
to the cleaners on this one.
The two main teachers on this Retreat, Myself and Jacque Owens where
paid with bad checks. It took quite some time but I have been paid all
but $30.00, I am unsure if Jacque has been paid in full yet. This event
happened in February.
At the last minute we where told we would have to pay our own travel
expenses,(I came from California)and that all the payment arrangements
had changed. One Instructor came from Canada to find she only had one
student. Yes, I take on the fact that I agreed to these terms. Stupid
me, I hate to disappoint anyone, especially my students.
The students where charged $750.00 for shared lodging and 3 days of
classes. It doesn't sound bad until you hear that we were all asked to
share a double bed with a stranger. We checked on the lodging costs and
found out that each person in a cabin paid the full cost of one nights
lodging on the three bedroom cabin. Six people in one cabin. Pretty
good profit on that. The gourmet food with horrible and it just gets
worst. I will not nit pick.
I did have a wonderful time. My students where wonderful. The best
group I have ever had the honor of working with, I loved the other
instructors. I felt I have made lifelong friends. I guess in the long
run it was worth it.
But I will never deal with Lora Anderson again. She is the type that
always has an excuse for her bahavior. It's always some one else's
fault.
I post this because my friend, a wonderful bead maker named Larry
Brickmen have bad dealings with her and didn't know if he should tell me
about the bad checks or horrible dealings he had. I wish he would have.
(I write this with his permission)
She plans to do Bead Retreat 2001. This is one event I would miss, both
as a teacher and a student.
Are there any students who would be willing to post there experience?
It is unfair for someone to act so improper in business. It is illegal
to write bad checks or refuse to return goods. Contact a lawyer or the
Oakrigde Police.
I am sad to post this but feel it is my duty as a person.
I send love,

This is the common name, used to avoid giving the actual originator
credit, for the technique presented by Ginneke Root in her little book
printed in the US by Lacis. I've never been able to remember the
title (see below). The translation from Dutch to English is a little
shaky, but anyone with a bit of experience won't have any trouble.
Lovely designs, good line drawings to show techniques, great color
photos. The usual Lacis high quality that we all know and respect.
I've managed to end up with two copies (confused the title with
another book to buy the second copy) and am willing to sell one for
list price plus half the postage. Each copy is in mint condition, so
I'm not sloughing off a "working copy" that's been marked up or
pressed open until the spine cracked. I'm pretty sure the book is in
print and can be bought from any supplier with a good selection of
books, of course.

So, you're saying people use the name "Dutch spiral" delibreately
to avoid giving credit where its due? I thought it was just easier to
remember "Dutch spiral" Do you know Gineke Root? Is she bothered by
this?

I don't really know what motives people have. Being a bit of a cynic,
I think that people who wanted to write about or teach the technique,
perhaps as something new and innovative, have used the term "Dutch
spiral" and avoided mentioning Root's role in developing it and
publishing a book about it for some reason. I've seen at least one
article in a bead magazines presenting the technique that made
absolutely no mention at all of Root or her book, for example.
Maybe the author omitted any mention of Root to make the article more
sellable or increase enrollment in courses, because they thought that
editors might worry about copyright (although techniques can't be
copyrighted) or they thought people who knew that it was Gineke Root's
technique, explained completely in an inexpensive book, might not
enroll in a class if they could buy the book instead.
Maybe someone was presenting the technique as their own redacted
version of a forgotten technique and had an interest in hiding the
fact that it's a modern technique explained in a book currently in
print.
Maybe they couldn't remember "Root". Maybe they've got a grudge
against Lacis. I can come up with a lot of imagined reasons,
obviously, but no one will know until the person who first named it
"Dutch spiral" tells us the real reason.
I know that if I were writing an article about "tatting" picot bead
lace, I'd mention that Sandy Forrington had developed the technique
and had at least three books about it in print, for example. I'd do
the same if I were using Virginia Blakelock's helix, just as I've seen
authors do in Lapidary Journal (the snake necklace project, as I
recall). So why didn't the person who wrote about the "Dutch spiral"
mention Root and her book?
Why not call it the "Root spiral" or the "Root Dutch Spiral"?
Considering all the discussion of whether to call one off-loom weaving
technique "peyote" or "gourd" stitch depending on whether or not the
beader is a member of a particular modern Native American religion, as
well as the discussion of whether or not non-Huichols should use
Huichol motifs when embedding beads in pitch, I find it odd that no
one seems to have noticed that Root's innovation has been renamed
"Dutch spiral", as if it were the only beading technique used in all
of the Netherlands from the beginning of time or something and not a
technique that she came up with in modern times and wrote a book about.
As to your other questions, no, I don't know her and no, I don't know
what she thinks of having her technique hijacked. But here's a
question for you--why do you think Root is a hard name to remember?
I think if you've heard it referred to only as "Dutch spiral,"
it's easy to think that it's a traditional stitch and not a modern
one, which might lead one to do less research when it comes
to attribution.
By the way, I ordered her book a few weeks ago, but it takes
3-5 weeks from Amazon.

Maybe it's called "Dutch Spiral" because she's Dutch? Or the technique/book was
first printed in that language?
Inside, on the back of the title page, my copy reads: "Translated from the
Dutch title KRALEN GEREGEN TOT SIERDEN"
Ginneke Root seems to refer to the technique as "circular beading" (in the
Lacis edition)-- the term "spiral" must have originated with whoever renamed it
"Dutch spiral"-- perhaps a possessor of a Dutch-language copy, who cannot read
that language? I have a lot of Japanese beading books I can't read well enough
to give credit for technique names or authors/artists, so I just "credit" stuff
made from those books as "a Japanese design".
>why do you think Root is a hard name to remember?
Gineke seems to be hard for people to remember. I have even seem some
say "Ginko Root" LOL.
If someone didn't learn it from her book, I can see how they would not
know to mention her name.
Also, it's not the same as religious symbolism.
