This FAQ on books, magazines, videos and craft books mail order sources
related to beads is created and maintained by Anita Li Reinehr for the
newsgroup rec.crafts.beads. All prices/price ranges quoted are estimates
in U.S. dollars. A lot of the titles and information
are obtained from ads & reviews in Ornament, Bead & Button and Lapidary
Journal and from catalogs. Please send all updates, corrections
and additions (particularly to the video section) to
'a...@albemarle.aero.org'. Suggestions on organization of the FAQ are
also welcomed.
The FAQ is organized into the following sections:
1. BOOKS
2. MAGAZINES
3. VIDEOS
4. OTHERS (not directly on beads, but can be used as reference)
5. CRAFT BOOKS/VIDEOS MAIL ORDER CATALOGS
Currently, all listings in each section is done by alphabetical
order according to the title. If there are expressed desires to
have the BOOKS section broken into categories by subject, I need
input on subject headings. Also, to help make title search a
little easier in the book section, XXXXXX (where X is the alphabet)
is used to mark the beginning of a new alphabet.

"Clear black and white drawings and text describe the threading patterns of
basic peyote stitch, both flat (even number of beads only) and tubular
(even and odd number of beads), as well as increasing and decreasing. More
unusual techniques include the 'curl' (an edge increase), flat spirals,
beaded beads, fancy spiral tubes, and edge trims. I wish this book had
more hints on how to hold your work to maintain desired thread tension, but
it is still an interesting compendium of techniques (such as the Ogalala
Butterfly, which originally was described in Horace Goodhue's 'Indian
Beadweaving Patterns')." --Diane Fitzgerald, New & Reviews 6/95 B&B

"Thousands of tips for both beginners and pros ... step-by-step
illustrations."--Ad in LJ
"It has a LOT of useful material! Very methodical, step-by-step instructins
for dozens of specific styles of necklaces, earrings and bracelets, by doing
them you learn a method of beading, and of course anything can be adapted and
combined. ... Most also have very clear drawings. Each project has a list of
supplies needed, then a "Step One, Step Two..." format. I have to say there
is something here for everybody - everything from tigertail to "Aleene's"
type loom work bracelets, moccasin beading, beading on clothes, peyote work,
origami earrings, brief review of making pclay canes, dream catchers, etc.!
I have almost every bead book there is (I haunt bookstores as well as bead
shops!) and I have to say that this is more useful than many ...."

"About beadwork I'm fearless, even valiant," begins this instructional manual
by multi talented performance artist and bead worker, Joyce Scott. Styled in
comic book format, drawings, callighaphy, and photogaphs describe the
techniques of mastering diagonal weaving/peyote stitch, husband, wife, and
slut beads. More than a how-to book, Fearless Beadwork is a glimpse into the
work and life of the exuberant Scott. --Ruth Satterlee
" Warning: Because the book is in comic-book style, hand-drawn and
hand-lettered with very few photos, it's not the world's easiest
teaching tool. But for someone who's got basic peyote stitch down, it
is an *asTOUNding!!* inspiration and kick in the butt. " --Jo Falcon

A Handbook of Bead Materials
Peter Francis Jr
"Essential for bead identification and appreciation, this compact volume
is packed with information. After outlining several basic ways to
determine bead materials, Francis specifies appropriate tests throughout
the book. One section discusses the manufacture of glass, and describes
small-scale, industrial and mechanized glass beadmaking processes. Others
cover stones used for beads, precious and base metals and their alloys,
and various forms of clay. The longest section deals with bone, amber,
coral, shell, and other organiz materials. Two shorter sections cover the
often overlooked categories of plastic and faience. A bibliography

Comments: This is a great book written by a likeable "character."
Despite its "home-made" appearance, this small book contains a great
deal more interesting and useful information than some other glitzy,
glossy, full-color bead books. A no-nonsense, straightforward
approach with good instructions.

Title: "Zen Beadwork - Improvisational Bead Embroidery"
Author: Carol Berry
Year: 1995
ISBN: None, Carol is self-publishing
Address:
Carol Berry
1007 E. Maple Street
Bellingham, WA 98225
If you order it please mention that you heard about it on the Internet!
Number of pages: 30, includes a detailed colored photo of one of her
pieces. It is spiral bound.
Price: $12.00 (which includes postage)
Review: Carol Berry was interviewed in the last year for an article in Bead
and Button, and her work has also appeared in Ornament magazine. If you
ordered the catalog for the 1995 Embellishment conference, one of Carol's
beaded bags was on the front cover. This book grew out of Carol's popular
classes on beaded embroidery. It covers the basic materials and techniques
for beaded embroidery, and includes instructions for a sampler to explore the
different stitches as well as a pattern and full instructions for a small
beaded pouch. More importantly, this is a book on exploring yourself through
beaded embroidery. A quote from the book "I think that it"s possible that the
beadwork itself contains energy, since sewing the beads on takes
concentration and committment and time, and that we sense this energy in the
beadwork, and so a beaded object seems to have power within it. There's also
something about the pocket or pouch form itself. It is little and precious,
and displays beauty while keeping tis contents hidden and safe."
