The Romanian painter Stefan Luchian is practically unknown in Western
Europe, although he is recognized as the first modern Romanian painter. I
have for long wanted to make a webpage about him, but finding appropriate
information was like searching for the famous needle in the haystack.

But, as Rodney so impressively expressed it some days ago in another
context, sometimes serendipity knocks so fortuitously that it seems scary. A
couple of weeks ago I found accidentally a book about Luchian in a
second-hand book store in Copenhagen with an extensive biography and a large
amount of photographs, both b/w and colour, of some of his best paintings.
My long wanted web page could finally be made.

Here is the result, showing a selection of Luchian's works on stamps,
combined with a few of his paintings, and a very brief compilation of his
short, but brilliant career, extracted from the mentioned book.

Interesting page:

Just to mention that the first Romanian modern painter is generally
considered Ion Andreescu.

"Fara ambitia de a realiza ierarhii valorice si cronologice, putem afirma
ca e primul pictor roman cu adevarat modern, fiind in acelasi timp unul
dintre punctele de referinta atunci cand vorbim despre traditia artei
romanesti." Translation: Without the ambition to create chronological or
value based hierarchies, we can affirm that he is the first really modern
Romanian painter, ...

The first page on the Web dedicated (in 1999) to the Romanian painters
Andreescu and Luchian, as seen on stamps:

Note: The quality of scans seems obsolete today but the file sizes were then
adapted to the 56K download speed.

Thanks to those who have written privately. I shall answer you all over the
weekend.

Maybe so. In lack of any other serious information, I have quoted the book
mentioned on the web page. I suppose that the author of any such book would
proclaim "his" painter to be the first modern (or any other appropriate
adjective) painter ;-)

I cannot possibly show all 96 colour paintings contained in the book, but
they certainly bear witness to an extraordinary talent, that was never seen
before in Romanian painting by the beginning of the 20th century. In my
personal view they surpass the beautiful -- still traditional -- landscapes
of Andreescu.

You might consider to redo the scans in a more appropriate size for a better
view :-)) And maybe also add a little factual information about each of the
two painters.

Ars longa, vita brevis (art is long, life is short).

Maybe one day I'll find the time to update the page but it can wait. Even
so, since 1999 so many stamp collectors could admire the nice Romanian
stamps dedicated to Luchian and Andreescu on the mentioned page.

http://www.values.ch/Countries/Romania/Andreescu/romanian2.htm

As for more info, even if the "Romanian painter Stefan Luchian is
practically unknown in Western Europe,..." (see above), I have found about
20,000 entries in Google, many of them in English, French, etc. BTW, for Ion
Andreescu I have found about 43,000 entries. So much about "searching for
the famous needle in the haystack" ;-)

Shortly back to art:

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
"A Psalm of Life" (1838), cf Hippocrates. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,
American poet, 1807-82.

And now back to Rita (on the Web), because my daughter is today in Texas.
