Yesterday, December 12, I got an email "receipt" telling me that they
had charged my credit card $0.90.
I wrote to them asking what they were charging me for. They replied:
>Hi,
>
>This email is to let you know that you were charged an additional .90 cents
>due to a price increase on the Dennis's stamp hinges.
>
>Thank you,
>Deborah (Customer Service)
WTF? A month after the sale they decide the price is going up and
charge me again? I immediately called my credit card company who
informed me that this is illegal. The rep I spoke to said he had never
heard of this happening in the 12 years he's been working with MBNA.
Sure, 90 cents isn't much but are you kidding me? Has Subway ever done
this to anyone else on this board? You'd better believe that I'll never
buy from them again.

In regard to the hinges, do you find them satisfactory? I've read that
the Subway "Dennis's" hinges are a poor substitute for the late,
lamented Dennison hinges.

Subway seems to be a rather strange place. I haven't checked lately,
but a couple of years ago I couldn't get into their web site at all,
nor could my son when I asked him to try, and he's a computer guru of
no mean skill. All that would appear on our monitors was a small Subway
logo. I contacted Subway about it, and was told that it was our fault,
since they designed their web site for PCs, not Apples. What a pile of
Bull Durham! It was certainly true that we couldn't see their web site,
but the reason was that their webmaster didn't know what he was doing.

The only difference from the "Supersafe" hinges I was using before (that
I can tell) is that they don't curl as badly. In any event, they're
holding the stamps in the album so I guess they're doing their job.
I have had no experience with Dennison hinges so I cannot compare.

I rarely post here, but read the postings occasionally. Today I feel
compelled to respond
to the recent posts regarding Subway Stamp Shop & it's staff.
I recently read the post here regarding an error made by Subway.
Reading the original post more carefully, I read the comment made
about the Goldbergs.
Let me tell you about the Goldbergs.
They are the nicest & most honest people you can ever hope to meet.
I have dealt on a personal level with Virginia & her late husband Mel.
They both have the most generous hearts and ALWAYS try to help people.
When I was starting out with my business, the Goldbergs treated me as
one of their own & helped me tremendously. I worked & attended at least
30
shows with the Goldbergs all over the US & Canada
& I can say first hand, they have the patience of Saints. On more
than one occasion, they bent over backwards to please customers, even
when the customers were in the wrong.
As for making a mistake, we all do it. The real difference is that when
you make
one, you immediately correct it. Subway has done that.
Subway is a great asset to ALL stamp collectors & they run a HUGE
business.
Mistakes are bound to happen now & then.
I find it hard to believe in this day & age, that we still have
anti-Semitic remarks being made. I feel angry that a wonderful human
being ( Mel ) has
been slandered & is not here to defend himself & his company.
Mel & Virginia are friends & they do not deserve the treatment &
abuse being rendered here.
I find this whole thing saddening. Where has people's tolerance for
others
gone?

1. I heartily hope that we never hear another word from Mr. Arthur.
While the stamp collecting community reflects the larger,
non-philatelic community, my experience is that stamp collectors are
generally more tolerant, curious, and generous people than Mr. Arthur
seems to be. His comments are completely unacceptable; his attitude
towards Jews reminds me that the Allies had a good reason to destroy
Hitler and his band of thugs. It also reminds me that, with people like
Mr. Arthur abroad in the world, another Holocaust is not unthinkable.
Indeed, if the rest us of tolerate such anti-semitic statements,
another Holocaust is likely. If Mr. Arthur were a member of my stamp
club and repeated his anti-semitic remark in a meeting, I would move
for his expulsion from the club, and if the club did not agree to his
removal, I would resign.
2. I just went to the Subway Stamps web site again, and it now works
perfectly with my Apple. I apologize for leaving the impression that
Subway was prejudiced against us Apple lovers!

In response to my email, Subway replied to me to say they were crediting
my credit card for the 90 cents. It hasn't appeared in the account yet
but I have no reason to believe it won't in a day or so.

Thank you. The credit has not yet appeared in my account but I believe
that it will soon. Thank you for your quick attention to this matter.
Thanks, Ada. I hope you speak for virtually all of us.

That the word "jewed" was used as an explanation is seemingly correct,
according to the Oxford English Dictionary!
In other words, to use the vernacular, a shady practice!
That they only corrected what they call a 'mistake" after getting a
lot of flak from readers, when they should have corrected immediately
upon being notified by the victim, proves Virginia's hypocicy!
It wasn't just the amount that annoyed the victim, but also the way it
was done!!
Ethnic slurs, whether or not they have made it into a historical dictionary,
are inappropriate and offensive.
Ada
>You are seeing a deliberate offense where there was simply a mistake,
>corrected almost immediately, not after widespread outcry.
The problem has been corrected, thank you. However, there is no
question but that the extra charge was deliberate, as evidenced by the
email I received after I asked what it was for. A "price increase" was
the explanation--a month after the original purchase.
The big mistake was in sending me an email "receipt" after the charge.
If I had not been notified thusly I probably would have just glanced at
the extra charge on my Credit Card statement and wondered what it was
for, but I would have recognized Subway as someone I had done business
with and probably just shrugged it off. They'd be far more likely to
"get away with it" if they did not notify their customers that extra
charges were being made.
>Ethnic slurs, whether or not they have made it into a historical dictionary,
>are inappropriate and offensive.
I agree. This has nothing to do with ethnicity. Sloppy business
practices? Questionable ethics? Perhaps. But not ethnicity.
Anyway, the situation has been rectified. Can we all just let it drop?
And who decided to crosspost this to rec.collecting.stamps.marketplace?
