An old dream has finally come true: to compile a website dealing with Art
History illustrated through stamps and philatelic material. After a long
labour caused by computer crashes, temporary scanner problems and more, the
baby was finally delivered -- a considerably sized offspring weighing 20 Mb,
and measuring 90+ pages with 2200+ images.

If you collect art stamps, or are "just interested" in art as such, you have
a perfect reason for visiting this site that deals with all art styles from
Cave Art to our days' Expressionism. Indigenous art is represented, as well
as individual painters, groups of artists, female artists, sculptors,
tapestry, photographers, architecture and literature. Maybe this site will
help artstamp collectors to categorize their art stamps within a given
style. The site can still be much improved, and many more artists will be
added down the road.

http://www.arthistos.frac.dk

Please visit the site and let me know what you think; I am all ears for any
constructive feedback ;-)

Fantastik!
You asked for feedback, so i took the liberty of forwarding your
posting to a philatelist who is better qualified and more experienced.
Watch for comments from Carol Trainor (Herlong CA USA).

Congratulations on your achievements, Mette!

Thanks for a lot of good answers here and privately. I am quite overwhelmed
of the good reception of this site :-) Already now I have also received
some valuable feedback from visitors that will be integrated into the site a
little later. Thanks, S, for forwarding my post to Carol Trainor. I am
looking forward to hearing from her. :-)

dear Mette,

so far I've just had a look at the Art Nouveau and Symbolism pages
wondering what the difference between the two is, and also wondering
- just as well when I read most books on that subject - that there
are no Polish artist involved. I can imagine that when no art history
book is giving you Polish examples someone else ough to.

Try to find out more about:

Stanisław Wyspiański
Józef Mehoffer
Jacek Małczewski

or the 'Młoda Polska' movement

Plenty of Polish stamps to illustrate that :)

groetjes, Rein

Rein,

I tried mailing this to you, but it bounced back.

I had trouble reading some of the characters in these names until I
changed the character coding used to ISO-8859-2 (identififed as "Central
European" in my news program). Your message did not specify any
particular character coding. Perhaps you can check to see if your news
program can add the proper message header for this?

Sorry Eric,

Unfortunately I can't change anything in this particular programme;
the last version is '0.96' and the maker John Rojewski stopped developing
so no amendments to expect ;;;))))

I should have realised that others need the ISO-8859-2 [which is
the standard code page on my computer

pozdrawiam, Rein

P.S.

I hope you find the Polish stamps just as well. I'll dig up some more
names if you want.

Dear Rein,

Thanks for your comment. You are right, I should elaborate further on the
differences between Art Nouveau and Symbolism that are different in there
origins, yet related like cousins ;-) What a symbolist language I am using
;-)) Thanks also for the information about the Polish painters; none of
them are mentioned in any of my sources, but I will have a look through my
Polish collection and will find at least Wyspianski. I know for certain
that I have neither Mehoffer nor Maczewski in my collection (that consists
mainly of Jan Matejko). Is it possible to point me to an online source (in
English, please!!) about Moda Polska?

Regards
Mette

dear Mette,

when I first came to Poland I immediately fell in love with
the most universal artist of the Young Poland movement:

Stanisław Wyspiański

both he and Józef Mehoffer were pupils of Jan Matejko.

I had the opportunity of seeing most of their works in Kraków, but
some in Warszawa as well. I have meters of books and albums on the
Młoda Polska / Youn Poland movement but all in Polish ;)

I found a few URL's that may help you to start searching Young Poland.
In one of them the author claims the same feeling I had 30 years ago
and that is probably still valid. Western Europe [or US] art historians
aren't a bit interested in what happened East of Berlin, generally speaking
of course.. I realized that the same goes for Hungarian artists, naming just
Jozsef Ripple-Ronai, as one you might want for the same period...

Well, I am not very skilled in Polish, to say the least ;-) So far I have
mostly occupied myself with engraved stamps and the Academy in
Krakow (which I have visited many years ago), but I have no knowledge
whatsoever about art museums in Warszawa.

I will search my Hungarian collections for this artist. At least 3 stamps
are
issued by Hungary (1972, 1977, 1979).

If the art historians were not interested in Eastern Europe 30 years ago,
they may have had good reasons for that. Now that we are all "family"
with the enlargement of the EU, there are also good reasons to get
acquainted with the art of this part of the world. I will do what I can
on my site. :-)

Thanks for the URLs. That will keep me occupied tonight, as there is
nothing worth watching in Danish TV (at least not for me ;-))

Thanks again for your input, and

It certainly is. Thanks Rodney. How do I find the main URL
containing these images?

I didn't have the time yet to go through my own collections,
but I know that Poland has issued loads of stamps by
Wyspianski, and 3 by Mehoffer. I'll be back later about
this. :-)

Sorry Mette, perhaps I wasn't clear,
these are images from my own personal PC e-album,
at the time of comitment to digital, the cynosure was
to get the 30,000 or so scanned just for ID purposes.

The majority are not yet centred, nor all top quality examples
so I couldn't offer them in the state they are.
I hope their description may assist you at least for ID, dates / values etc.

Good quality scans are hard to come by, I have been mainly working on US
for the past 12 months.

Rgds

That's OK, I guess it was the .jpg extension in the file-names
that confused me. No problems :-) Thanks for the ID-help :-)
